The Last Person.....

There was a short lived thread called "The Depressing Nature of the Last Person Thread"..Do a search and look it up, interesting reading and I don't believe it's closed so you can add a comment if you desire...

Drac---I did look it up. I don't want to knock anyone, but... there were comments on that thread that suggested that the reason for people posting to it was to bump up their post count. This makes no sense to me, though---a lot of people on this thread (you, Terry, Arnisador, Kacey and on and on) have so many posts that you've probably stopped counting them. What see is a kind of real-time conversation amongst friends, the kind of discussion you really would have in a nice tavern over a few cold ones, going from one thing to another just for the pleasure of each other's company. That's what the thread was supposed to be, I suspect. I have a feeling that the Thought Admiral, in starting the thread, figured it would turn out just this way, an endless conversation, and that the `contest' pretext would be forgotten pretty much from the start. I'm not asking this, OK?, should he drop in on the way home, it's just my hunch...

Hey Brian, I have to say that in most years I don't really pay much attention to what's happening, but this year... there's so much desperate emotional baggage those guys on the field are carrying (this town really does live and breath OSU football, it's scary) that I'll feel quite sad if they blow it against Michigan... no kick against Michigan, btw---I love Ann Arbor (even the name is sweet) and UofM is a great school... what team do you support?

Exile I am no Michigan fan! I am a tried and true Graduate of Michigan State University. Which is kind've funny because Ohio State fans and MSU fans have a certain kindred spirit. (neither of us wants to see UofM do well ) Having said that I have enjoyed all of the times that I have visited Ann Arbor. I was even there the night they won the NCAA basketball championship many, many, many, many moons ago. It was a great time but very, very, very scary due to the ensuing mayhem that went on.

Really I just view it as a chat thread and enjoy having the opportunity to exchange pleasantries and a few laughs with other martial artists.

That is what really makes this thread great.

Whether it was meant to be or not, this is the place I go to catch up with people; it's where I really get to know people outside their opinions on various MAs - and in that sense, it's the most important thread on the board, the place where we all come together as people.

Some of the best times that I've have had over the years came from settings just like this..A group of Masters and Grandmasters sitting around and having a few cocktails and talk about everything and anything..

True, just a couple of days ago Brian told me congrats on getting 2,000 post in this thread alone...I was totally unaware of that fact..

Oho!! U of M's other great rivalry (and in certain years, much more hotly contested than the one with OSU... we've had plenty of years of helpless losses to UM in the Big Game!)

Yes, exactly. The OSU one gets a lot of attention, but knowing the intensity of a lot of U of X vs. X State U rivalries, I'll bet there's more real emotional edge on your side than on ours---I mean, for you, football or no football, this is a year-round issue, probably.

They are as sports crazy as the folks here are, that's for sure. But Ann A. is a very charming, picturesque place---the perfect image of a university town. But MSU's much more challenging, in a way. I was there at a conference once, was trying to find the building we were in by walking along the river and after an hour realized I was in totally the wrong part of the campus... I got there after another half hour looking as though I'd finished a ten-mile run. That is one big campus!

It definately is a great place to know people better away from their opinions on martial arts.

That's what I mean...the numbers have nothing to do with it. People on the thread just like each other, is the simple truth.

Yes it is a large campus but gorgeous and beautiful! I do not pay that much attention to the UofM, MSU or OSU rivalries but it is fun every now and then to get a jab in. Particularly with UofM's problems for the past ten years in basketball.

Really though I have not found a college campus that I disliked. You have to say something for all of that youthful energy and positive spirit. Alma College in our small town is a perfect example. It makes a great small town a fantastic small town.

Yes, it's definitely a Good Thing to have. And I think it makes the whole MT board a better place to talk about stuff, including martial arts. The more comraderie there is, the less chance of getting into flame wars and a lot of hostility and insecurity. The strictly MA conversations are probably a lot more relaxed and happy because of the contact people get to have on The Last Thread...

Agreed! :) Its nice to kick back and talk about everyday things, whats going on with everyone, etc.

It has been raining here ALL DAY..Now the weather must be ready to change as my sinuses are suddenly running non-stop...

Well..I've been known to stick my nose in here from time to time just to uhm..."stir the pot". That being said...

Go Blue!!!!

:redcaptur Bwaahaaaahaa!!!

People at OSU have been kind of pleased about that too, for some reason... :wink1:

Absolutely. There are a lot of very, very mellow small college towns like that in Ohio... islands in the stream, sort of.

I've been having that too, nonstop here, for two days. It's a combination of rainy weather and some horrible plant that's decided to flower, is my story about it... Claritan doesn't help, either.
