You have to do 100 pushups nonstop? That was doable in my early 20's when I was a young well-oiled machine, but these days I can usually crank out 30 at a time, and that's after I'm a little warmed up. I don't think that's reasonable for older guys, especially guys with a lot of wear and tear. Age definitely makes a difference!I've decided I will go back to class, but only when I am ready. I want 50 honest pushups before I go back. the pushups in class are not good and I need to be able to do them well. They expect 100 for the black belt grading, but I've seen those gradings and those are not pushups. It's a matter of personal honour.
That's typically how many I do per set.30 pushups, I'm 2/3 of the way towards my target.
It's only even remotely possible for most of our students because of the incredibly poor form standards tbh. If I had my way they would expect a stone of a certain size lifted instead. Or something like that. I'm nearly six foot tall and I weigh over 200, plus my arms and legs are pretty long so I struggle with pushups. I understand why they do it- it's to try to eliminate the fat sensei syndrome that existed in a lot of classes in the twenty hundreds, but I don't think it actually translates to the kind of strength that's actually useful in combat very well. The kind of tests they're using now in the navy, for example, are better in that regard. You have to do 100 pushups nonstop?
