I'm a wierdo. Even in my junkie days I have always exercised. I had a bad name for being the guy who, when we were doing all sorts of things we shouldn't have, would suddenly start cleaning the toilet or cooking everyone some dinner. I don't fit in anywhere.

You know, when you're a martial artist as opposed to a lifter, I've come to believe that you don't want to become one of those sad gits who spends hours in the gym chasing smaller and smaller 'gainz'. Nobody ever lost a fight because the other guy could bench 5 more pounds than them. Enough is necessary, but enough is also enough.

I worked out in my twenties that making common cause with fellow outcasts was a big part of being a wierdo....
Yeah I was a punk rock kid, so we only fit with other freaks and weirdos, there were quite a lot of us and we had the larger diaspora of punks and losers at large as well. Often there were 600-800 kids in the local all ages dive club where bands played in Long Beach California. It was called Fender’s Ballroom. There are a lot of bootleg videos of shows from there in the early and mid 1980s. It was a completely wild scene there.

I dislike lifting but find it necessary, unlike running, which I deplore completely and find as many medical issues as possible to avoid.

I was very seriously into punk when I was younger too...

Not sure if you could say i hung out with outcasts, dropouts, or just plain undesirables, or a combination of all three, in my 20s…. I hung out with bikers…
I hung out with people who started off smoking a bit of weed and taking a few plls, and I cut them out of my life when one of them offered me heroin. It's lonely, but I have new friends and I'm in a better place.

And I'm kinda glad I did. I got out while it was still fun. I see these guys at drug and alcohol service meetings to this day sometimes. They're my age and they look fourty years older than me.

I have 11 dead friends from opiates. Yes, 11.
Yup. I've been to two or three funerals myself for the same reasons. It's sad. I never used heroin, but I did take all sorts of other things. Best not to say which ones on here, but I could see it was getting silly and took myself out of it. I will only hang with any of them if they've been clean for a while, because of my own history and struggles with alcohol. Fortunately, one or two of them have got clean. One friend in particular has got clean, stayed clean and built a new life for himself with a beautiful woman. I have some inkling of the amount of character that took.

I liked running when I was a teenager, and I was a lot smaller. I'm much, much stronger than I was then but getting all 200 pounds or so of me around a 5k is... not something I like doing. I'm going to have a good go at it in the spring though, I'm too old to be running in the wet and dark and the winter here in the hills is no joke.

I am a lot better off now since i stop hang out with bikers, and the like, about 30 years ago, there was a lot of drinking, anda lot of drugs , i did not get into the drugs bit, but did my share of drinking. Did risky things, and some of those folks were down right dangerous. Interesting while i was there, don’t miss it, and currently think i was a idiot for being around it as long as i was.

It’s a wet, cold, hilly place here too. We don’t get snow often, but we get about 40-80ā€ of rain.

I was seen as weirdo in my late teens spending my savings going to Japan training Karate instead of staying home and buy a cool car……heck, just training karate was(maybe still is ?) weirdo

That's awesome though, I wish I'd had the stones to do that, I just trained in this country in the next town. I'm very, very grateful to the pioneering generation who went out to bring karate here from Japan. Without guys like you, we wouldn't have anywhere to train whatsoever.
