Ah, I don't really think it is the official line.

All of the major subjects will eventually have exams that students must pass according to NCLB. In 2006, the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment for "Social Studies" was unveiled to teachers. Specific benchmarks for historical knowledge were revealed and students must achieve a passing score on this exam in order to graduate. This is official government approved history. All states that have benchmark standards for students will eventually have the same thing.

I will have to check the history book, should I ever get to see it, how it looks here.
But much of what happens in school, past the list of dates, depends on the personal preferences of the teacher (I can probably still recount the average yearly climate data from Novosibirsk, while I have no idea what that creek is called running past my mom's house!).

Does that mean you will all start spelling and pronouncing English words properly?

Or at the very least know what the types of political systems actually are so that anything the Right Wing doesn't like isn't called 'socialist' and Liberals aren't communists or even left Wing, we've had Liberals for centuries so I'd say we have the meaning correct lol!

Sorry Tez, I will never pronounce "Jauguar" like you :) It just sounds...wrong :)

It's JAG U R. easy! sometimes though the way we pronounce things actually causes problems as we haven't got any idea of what the other means. It's not just pronounciation eithr, in political terms we have your right wingers going on about liberals who are a totally different animal outside the States, it can cause great offence when they rant about liberals to non Americans. It would be nice too if the American right wing didn't bang on at the rest of the world in the way it does.
this is from the 1960s but is as pertinent today as it was then, an era that was closer to the communist witch hunts.

It proves I think that many people forget and repeat every mistake they ever make. it's like watching the repeat of a sports match and expecting the scoreline to be different.

Our history instruction is pathetic in this country...history has been replaced with social studies...and social studies has become Americas political indoc course. I have one in college, one in HS and one in Middle. Ive seen what passes as "history" these days.

Pathetic.

Product of Federal Involvement in our educational system, AKA: No Child Left Behind. I'm afraid it's only going to get worse... I mean, if you're ignorant of things like history and what your Rights are then it's not very difficult for the "powers that be" to repeat attrocities or take away your Rights now is it.

A wrote a term paper for Political Science back in '95 titled "Keep Them Dumb and Docile"... it predicted this sort of thing. Perhaps I can dig it up... been meaning to go through and inventory what I have in storage anyway LOL
