the real JKD

I consider the teachings directly from Guru Dan to be the purest JKD
Him & Bruce formed the nucleus of the ultimate JKD, all the other teachings are just watered down interpretations
Many of the "original JKD" people would disagree with you and claim that the JKD Concepts group has been watered down from what Bruce Lee actually taught.

Bruce Lee taught Jun Fan Gung Fu as the base for a student to learn first. It was from this framework that JKD is supposed to "launch" from. I have come across many JKD Concepts people who just basically teach MMA. Nothing to really go on other than their marketing use of "JKD" that would suggest it has any ties to Bruce Lee.

Part of why Dan Inosanto's approach differs is because Dan promised Bruce Lee that he would not teach JKD publicly. So, a different curriculum was created to highlight the concepts of JKD and not how it was actually taught/learned.

Note: I am NOT saying one approach is better than the other, just pointing out that what "JKD" actually is, is very hard to pin down and opinions (and quality) is really going to vary depending on the instructor's background and experience. Just the same with ANY martial art.

Why is that? Have you heard of a child’s game called ā€˜Telephone’?
Him & Bruce formed the nucleus of the ultimate JKD, all the other teachings are just watered down interpretations
It’s funny I’ve never heard of him. Is he not supported by ā€˜Bruce Lee Ltd Incorporated & Associated Franchises and Souvenirs’?

Wow, when I was at the academy (77-80) JKD was definitely a style all it’s own. We had 20 minutes of Kali at the end of each class. Really kind of a separate thing. You didn’t advance through phases based on your escrima skills only your Jun Fan skills (modified WC, boxing and savate kicking). I never made it past 4th phase and quit shortly into 4th phase.
I think as time went on FMA played a bigger roll in JKD. Ted Lucay Lucay, Jeff Imada, Dan Sullivan, Paulson and Vunak all moved to an essentially combined Panatukan. They could still teach original JKD but it seems that modern Panatukan has it all combined.
It seems.

So, I am a little confused here.....

You can't find the real JKD because
The real JKD is from Guru Dan
and
After my many training sessions with Guru Dan i now have come to the conclusion that I must open my own school
I feel disappointed by other "Sifus "
So, you are going to teach JKD to fix this issue, and you will
Teach pure JKD not a watered down version
But....
I consider the teachings directly from Guru Dan to be the purest JKD

So, are you Bruce? Are you Dan? If not, then how are you going to teach "pure JKD" when, by your definition, "pure JKD" can only come from Bruce and Dan? How do you not fall under the category of "all other teachings?"

A dazzling show of logic! Well done @wab25!

Telephone

I’m sure you don’t have the same physique as Lee and Dan. Your limbs are different lengths. Your centre of gravity may be very different because of your height. You may have different amounts of muscle mass from them and you fibre types are likely in different proportions to them and your brain/body wiring is definitely unique to you.

Therefore the teaching you received from your teachers would’ve been modified, by him to accommodate your unique ā€˜compositions’.

If you try an apply those methods, unmodified to a 150cm flexible woman and also to a 210cm muscular, stiff, man one or indeed both of them will think your a very bad teacher because they won’t work. Thus you will have to modify your teaching according to each student’s anatomy and thus it is not the same as Guro Dan’s. Indeed, JKD might not even ā€˜work’ for AndrĆ© the Giant or Warwick Davis unless you radically change the teaching you have received. Indeed, they may be incapable of perform JKD like either Lee or Dan. But you try a get them to appear outwardly, as close as possible, but they’ll never be ā€˜the same’. Do you see the point we all seem to be making?

I’d suggest it’s highly likely that JKD has undergone ā€˜divergent evolution’ due to ā€˜telephone’ effects and the need to teach things differently according to population differences.

I don't know that you could teach AndrƩ the Giant any martial arts at this point.

I teach only what Guru Dan tought me & I was a closed door student
But, Dan taught different things to different people. He even taught the same thing differently to different people.

I can see this with my own art Danzan Ryu. Okazaki (the founder of the art) taught one student for years, gave him an instructors rank and sent him from Hawaii to the main land to teach.... years later he sent a second one.... years later and third.... years later a fourth... These guy got together and formed the Danzan Ryu organization that I belong to. But, they each did things very differently.... they did the same technique completely differently. But each one was doing it exactly as Okazaki did it and as Okazaki personally taught them to do it. But, Okazaki was still evolving his art. This is a case where 4 different people could do the same technique, exactly as they had been taught by the same founder of the same art.... and you get 4 different versions, many of which will initially look quite different.

This happens in all arts.... Depending on when a person trains with the founder, you get different things. This is in addition to how things need to be adjusted per person... as @Gyakuto was pointing out.

Hell, I've taught people things differently just a couple months or a year apart. Either because I got some new insight, or my natural fighting style changed and unconsciously it impacted the way I both taught and performed a specific technique.

Why did you stop?
Good question. One, I live in Irvine, I was starting a family and responsibilities and time simply took over. Two, in retrospect, I simply didn’t realize what a privilege it was to be at the academy. I took it for granted.

Actually Bruce’s son Brandon was in my class. Crazy.

I could think of any living giants so fell back on AndrĆ© šŸ¤·šŸ¾
You can always default to Paul Wight, who was in WWE as The Big Show. When he first got started in WCW, as The Giant, he was billed as AndrƩ The Giant's son.

There, that's my wrestling nerd moment for the day.
