"It's better to wear a white belt and have people wonder why, than wear a black belt and have people wonder why."

I've been using this quote since I've seen it, but I don't know who to attribute it to.

That is my usual response to people who ask some variant of the question "I've been out for XXX and am starting again" or "I'm starting a new art" followed by "should I have to wear a white belt?"

You make them wear the rank they got, so your students can laugh. :)

"Better to wear a white belt and have people wonder why than to wear no belt and have your pants fall down!"

The advantage to wear a white belt are:

if

- you defeat a black belt, it will make the other guy look bad.
- a black belt defeats you, it won't make you look bad.

When a

- rich guy drives a cheap car, there are many advantage there.
- poor guy drives an expensive car, there are many disadvantage there.

Huh?

My favorite advantage is the expectation, it's low. The black belt gave it his best and did great... Cool except he is supposed to be a black belt afcoarse it should be good
That white belt did great today how come that student looks good enough to be purple belt maybe even brown belt, if he keeps it up heel be a black belt in due time

Google is searching thread titles, not post content, I suspect. But it's pretty close just the same, since although I've made the same statement in person a number of times, I don't think I've posted it anywhere but here.

It sounds like a paraphrase of the Samuel Clemens quote "it is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

I don't know where it came from but its a good quote. And its true.

The first part is true. As for the second part, if a rich guy drives a cheap car than he's being a Mr. Scrooge. As for the poor guy driving the expensive car, he probably wouldn't be able to afford it being poor and all.

Sometimes you have to take the risk of embarrassing yourself so you will learn from your mistakes.
