Very ... my instructor and I think alike as far as self defense goes. Only frustration I'm having now is of my body type and the age factor ... kung fu kicks my butt ... LOL ... still learning kempo, but throwing some kung fu into the mix.
more kung fu in to the current Kempo system is a really good thing I think. We have linear and circular movements but there really isnt a lot of blending. our assitant instructor (who is an exceptional MA'ist) has really started to work with me on this, we think a like so we tend to work together a lot. But our instructor doesnt really work it to much. Kempo has the quick strikes and the powerful strilkes but I dont see them mixed together very often. This could be only my blue belt experience talking but from watching the higher ranks I dont see it either.

the fluid motion in Kung Fu should really help this in my opinon.

You got it. I was under the belief that I was learning some KF. The first time I saw my current instructor move, I immediately knew that I was mistaken in that belief. My thoughts now, there is a major difference, in my lineage of kempo, between the East Coast (Demasco) and the West Coast (Mattera), both of which came from the Villari lineage. West Coast is very Japanese oriented, East Coast, what I'm incorporating now, is much more Chinese oriented and has kung fu lineage intertwined.

thats cool. your students will be getting some quality material.

what is your opinion on this?

What about adding some akido? not the throws or take downs, but just the redirection and moving. one of the other students at my dojo is a very good MA'ist, well he went away to college for the semester and couldnt stay with Kempo because there was no school in the town where he went to college so he decided to take aikido. He showed me some of the footwork and stuff and it has really improved his sparring. I think this would be a great addition to the system and again would help with improving the fluid motion in the style.

We already have some of that in the style along with some jui jitsu. One of the concepts I am learning if redirection. Not only in redirecting their energy, but in the sense of changing direction on the opponent, get them moving or even thinking one way, then changing up. To me, this encompasses some of the concepts of Aikido (I could be wrong).

This is definately my weakest point, alot of that is size, age and flexibility, although my teacher has some background there as well. A black belt in Jui Jitsu and blue belt in BJJ, so I do work a tad on the ground. Just not where I want to be. It is being incorporated however.
