I can't say I was ever 'living in the gutter' but I had a Lot of friends who lived pretty rough. More than a few drug users and dealers. Heavy drinkers and more than a few who lived a sketchy, often illegal life. Some of them are my most cherished friends to this day. But I knew I had to physically separate from them if I wanted the kind of life I desired. I had conversations with several of them about this fact and without exception, they all understood.I think that's the key. I need to hang out with people who aren't going to encourage me to go back to my old life. It's tough as I miss my old friends, but I can't be around that stuff because of my own history.
An old saying around aa/rehab circles - if you hang out with barbers long enough, eventually you're going to get a hair cut.I think that's the key. You can. But just not in the environments that created those habits.I think that's the key. I need to hang out with people who aren't going to encourage me to go back to my old life. It's tough as I miss my old friends, but I can't be around that stuff because of my own history.
Hey that's a good idea, we could have a survival weekend in the woodsYou can. But just not in the environments that created those habits.
Take them for a bush walk or something.
I think being able to create that ability to have an activity is important but gets lost.
I find things like picnics kind of fun. And it worked well as a destination event. So I ride motorcycles. But I get to where I am going. Stare at the thing and ride back.
The default then becomes pubs.
But ride, picnic. Works well. Soaks up a bit of time to appreciate where you are.
Heeeeey I did something similar at end of last year preparing for my grading! Have done 10kg in a backpack running to the top of a mountain, but did a huge run around the mountain (uneven terrain, uphill, downhill, climbing rocks etc) just carrying a 10kg dumbbell, took 58 minutes and it was beyond gruelling... fun times and a great challenge!3 miles with a 10kg dumbbell and about half my usual hiking load. I found an article about it on strongfirst.com
Cool! Gonna try that up on the mountain when I get fitterHeeeeey I did something similar at end of last year preparing for my grading!
