Iga was one of my favorite places during our trip, and we will definitely be visiting again next time. The castle was beautiful and there were hardly any other people there when we stopped in. There is also a ninja museum and presentation near the castle. Nara was great and the temple was really impressive. There is a giant Buddha inside of it. The temple grounds have deer all over the place that will approach you for some wafer crackers. We also went to Kyoto and toured the old imperial palace. That was a cool experience.

If you walked around the back of Todaiji temple (ā€˜giant Buddha’) there are many Shintō shrines including a tiny one for practitioners of Iaido. It looked closed when I found it, but there was monk in a little room next to it doing some admin. I motioned to the shrine and he waved me on to enter as I pleased. I climbed the little set of steps, slid the door back and entered. There was barely room for two people inside and it was pitch black to my eyes that’d been in a bright day. I stood there wondering what to do and decided to wait for my eyes to become dark adapted. Minutes passed but I could make out tiny points of light, two in fact in front of me. I waited longer and I could see more around these bright spots…was it…a face? As the minutes crept by I was suddenly startle to see a pair eyes glowering at me! I felt my heart rate leap. I realised it was the face of Fudō Myōō and next to him Marishiten. I lit some incense, utter an incantation and backed out of the shrine.

It was an amazing and unexpected experience.

I remember being amazed to find out the meanings of the patterns on the clothing worn by various entities and even in the art from woodblock carvings. These are incorporated in traditional Wabori/ irezumi as well. Often, the Hori are the ones with the most intimate knowledge about the details contained in these very old art forms. They say so much to the few that can read the meanings behind the symbolism and interpret the differences that combinations of these symbols mean. To the casual observer it’s just a fine detail, but it really tells more of a story about an individual in a particular depiction.

F**king tea cakes. Toasting them requires the vigilance of a fighter pilot! One moment they’re pale and unappetising, one is momentarily distracted (by the cat) and in that instant, they are blackened and disgusting 😠😔🤬

Back to the gym tomorrow for the first time in sixth months! I’m quite nervous. I’ll use half the weight for three sets with plenty of reps ā€˜left in the tank’ for a couple of weeks before I start re-inflating my withered muscles in earnest; they really do look like the air’s be sucked out of them. I’m also going to ask a personal trainer to devise a core muscle programme for me…I want to see what all the fuss is about.

Wish me luck 😬

Very happy for you! Ever try Pilates? My wife teaches it. People swear by it for core work.

I'm sure your body will quickly bounce back after a few weeks. You'll do great!

When I had back pain many years ago, I went to a pilates class recommended by my physiotherapist. I found it really boring, I’m afraid, began to resent the teacher for being so dull and gave up after about 6 months! It’s not for me!😐

I really enjoyed the gym; it made me feel normal again. The lady’s were enthusiastically welcoming (as a true Brit, I’m not a hugger, but I participated on this occasion), the blokes took the p*ss out of me!

I had to use my great strength of will of keep things light and three sets of 10, although that did creep up to 15 here and there! ā˜ŗļø I’m going three times a week from now and Wednesday will be the main core day.

Not all teachers are equal.
