It’s done for fun, the “fun” part is that some globe-earth believers get really serious in explaining the eart isn’t flat

The last time i engaged in a flat vs globe lecture vs argument was during a multiple ORIF with iliac crest harvest and autograft. The flat proponent was a self proclaimed Orthodox Jew whom possessed visible tattooing, and whom I witnessed ordering and consuming a double bacon cheeseburger from the hospital cafe. I feel a little ashamed in that I no longer engage with people with various ludicrous ideas. It’s shouting into the void because ‘fifty scholars can be silenced with a single fact but you cannot silence an idiot with single fact’. One simply cannot take them through a logical progression of ideas which would allow them to come to the logical and correct conclusion. So why bother? Let them think the earth is flat/the moon landings never happened/vaccines put tracking chips into your body/the illuminati rule control the world/orange man is a moral, intelligent, articulate person. These beliefs have absolutely no effect upon my or anybody else’s life, they just irritated me but that was my problem.

Meh. This rings of scholarly arrogance, which often leads to blind ignorance.
I am a double master degree engineer with a Ton of additional certifications. Big deal. My mind is a sum zero game. I never go into a problem solving session thinking I know everything or have it all figured out because I will surely miss something or find something I have never seen before. I enjoy the chase of the hunt.
As for talking to idiots, I tend to agree but most often you can get anyone to a place of reason with a little effort. They don't have to fully agree or even understand, just have to acknowledge the idea or correction. Whether they stay there is on them. And for the truly extreme, screw 'em and move on.
But to leave someone in their own 'grand illusion' without at least debating the differences if just feeding the illusion.
