We have to buy our own weapions, so that my sensei knows that we are serious about learning how to wield it, and so that we would respect it and appresiate it more.

It puts the burden of responsibility on the student, which is where it should be when you are assessing commitment AND it reduces the red tape or accusations that you are scamming your students for more profit by selling them yourself (as a requirement as opposed to an option).
