The Power of Encouragement

I am starting a 1,000 form challenge for everyone on MartialTalk who wishes to participate. The event is free. It is not a competition, it is encouragement! It is for personal spiritual and physical development. Non-Chinese styles are welcome to participate.

If you are interested in participating, the goal is to do one form per day for 1000 days (three years), or three forms per day for one year. Regardless of when you finish your challenge, you will be honored for your participation.

In order to participate, all I ask is that you "sign up" by talking to me in DM where I will explain the basic rules. The basic rules are that you will choose a form, and you will send me some sort of evidence of your progress. I suggest that it be a short video of your form at the beginning, and at the end. And/or, some short paragraph explaining how the challenge helped you, how you made progress or made a breakthrough in your form, etc. In other words, something encouraging and inspirational! I would at least like a photo of some posture of your form (a publicity shot, if you must) showing your development after the challenge, which surely would be substantial after 1,000 form repetitions!

This is being done through me, so please contact me if you wish to participate! Again, it is free, and if you do not want to continue after some time, there is no pressure!

Good luck to everyone.

I do 50 Korean forms every day. Does that count?

I know from my experience in Taekwondo, that some poomse can be done in just a minute. I myself have chose one of my Sifu's forms, the 28 Chen Style Essential Movements form. It takes less than five minutes to do, even if you are careful. I think this is more about encouraging yourself to practice every day than to be an endurance challenge.

Some days, I excuse myself from training because it is raining. Since I chose this form, and I can practice indoors by myself, it is a great encouragement to do more. Also, since I chose a 3 to 5 minutes form for myself, I am then able to practice other martial arts as well. It is my hope that at least for myself, when I go to do this form, I will continue to train other things too!

I think if you chose one of the short forms you do (poomse?) that is great! It would be easier to complete the challenge. Maybe one of the things you can express when you complete the challenge is how even working on a short form helped you in surprising ways, like enabling you to practice on days when you otherwise would just rest!

Is this being posted anywhere? Particularly asking about the videos/pictures

Did it ages ago, back when I was high on karate.
To gain mastery one should do 10000 tekki kata(Naihanchi)( according to some writings by Gishin Funakoshi( if I remember right)
I did 30 tekki kata/day apart from all the other exercises of daily kihon and kumite(basics and sparring), within a year I had done my 10000 tekki katas, its a good exercise

why cant you do the traditional long Taiji form ? It’s well balanced within the correct timeframe.
And wouldn’t adding other martial arts to your Taiji be kind of a hinder to your progress ?

True. Some of the lower forms take less than a minute, some take over 3-minutes. It is a good hour workout every day. I can't run anymore so forms are a good workout for me.
I have done this for over 5-years now and pre-accident more like 20-years. We do a combination of basic hyungs, Pinon (Pyong-Ahn) and Palgwe forms, MKD hyungs, and KKW Poomsae along with some other archaic forms. In total over 50 patterns. It lathers you up pretty good.

I was thinking of making a facebook group, but now that you mention it, I think a forum on MartialTalk would be better. I don't think the group needs to be private, as long as it is on here, it would be for MartialTalk members only. I think having it on here would make it easier to join and participate. What do you think?

Eh , I just saw the challenge is also issued on another martial art forum !

That is not an answer to any of my questions. Why so evasive? What are you afraid of? Are you ashamed of something?

Who are you calling a troll?
Is that not you on the other site?

This isn't even a clever way for someone who never shows their own work to ask everyone else to show theirs.

I am not interested. I like the idea of doing a form 1000 times (and may do that myself), and the idea of shared accountability. But not interested in having videos of myself posted on here, or particularly on fb or other martial arts forums, without there being some specific purpose of me posting them (ie: instructional/explaining something, which I've done before).

Probably me that’s the troll. I thought it valid to bring up here since he had just written he want to keep the “challenge” just here on MT when he was asked where he’s going to upload/post others pics and vids

It's actually ok :) What Monkey Turned Wolf said is a real concern, having some way to show accountability in a way that is perceived both as 'practical/for-purpose', also 'safe' and 'convenient'.

There are probably ways to solve this but I just wanted to see if something could be done casually.

This isn't even a clever way for someone who never shows their own work to ask everyone else to show theirs.
*popcorn* No offense, but it doesn't sound like you thought this through. If the challenge were to get started, I would obviously be participating in it and posting videos of myself. Something tells me, however, that even if we get this up and running you wouldn't want to join the challenge ;-)

*"Obviously"? 🤔

Feel free to show where others should know you’d also be participating in the “challenge.”

I do feel it's good for others to show their work in helping to clarify or make a point,
have asked others to do so in the past....most do not....
