After much shoveling of crap, I finally found what you are referring to. Yes, it appears as if the Pentagon has overstepped it's bounds. They should cease and desist any further collection of this sort of information.

I'm sure someone will try to make this out to be part of some large ongoing conspiracy, but I doubt it's anything quite so grandiose. Merely the collection of intelligence information by some misguided intelligence wonks in the Pentagon. This does need to stop, though.
