BTW, Carol, I've seen Silat demonstrated (on me!) and the students ability to get to my outside was stunning. Have you found the same in Silat as opposed to Karate?
Very much so. None of the Pencak Silat that I have been exposed to is done on the attacker's centerline. Moving to the outside can also put one in a position to take leverage against an attacker...which is particularly helpful for training with someone bigger than me.
My training partner is nearly a foot taller and nearly 100 pounds heavier than me. If I can throw him, I think the application will work on the street.
