There are maaaany many ways of using and hitting the makiwara. Just in these first two videos, the top video is Sandra Sanchez (world class athlete and competitor), and she's using the makiwara in a way to work her forward/back stability and balance (she's standing on something too) and to keep herself from being pushed back.

Second vid is driving through with hips. But yeah many other variations available too :)

Thanks,

The power should be "bottom -> up". Your back knee should "bend -> straight" before your "hip rotation".

There's no real specific way to hit a makiwara. You use it to develop and refine strikes the way you would normally do them. It doesn't have to be punches since you can stand at different angles to the post. Elbows, back fists, knife hands.....you can get really creative with it. You can stand sideways to the post and hit it with hooks if you want.

The beautiful thing with the makiwara is it gives you feedback. You will know if you are doing it wrong because it will hurt .

Hitting makiwara HARD!

Obviously, I have been looking at a lot of U tube videos dealing with makiwaras. particularly those made with 3, 4 or more 4" boards bundled together, with the boards getting progressively shorter. The boards seem to be mostly 3/4" thick ending up with a total thickness of about 4". Many of the boards are shown being glued or screwed to each other when upright. While other videos show the board attached together only at the bottom. I am not an engineer but it seems to e there would be a significant added stiffness of the bundle when struck with the boards attached together. When the unattached boards are hit as they are bending back they can slide against each other thus offering less resistance than if they cannot slide, as with screws or glue.

Does it really make a difference? or am I overthinging this And how does this compare to a 4x4 that has been cut to taler at one end?

You experience or opinion?

Gluing the Board

All that's left now is to glue your boards (1x4s) together. This step is technically optional, but without it, the boards can deviate, and will make a sharp thwacking sound when hit that will annoy your housemates, neighbors, HOAs, and everyone else. The gluing process is simple. Use wood glue to attach each board to the one larger than it, squaring off the bottom edges each time. You can insert a bolt through the holes to make sure they line up, but be careful not to glue your bolt in. Once you've applied the glue and aligned the boards, clamp them together in many different places (at least the top end of each board and the bottom of the whole assembly) and leave to dry. If you notice any glue seeping out, you can use a plastic card or metal scraper or anything similar to scrape it off. Indoor Makiwara

Machiwara

The vertical "shaft" of the machiwara is constructed of 3 separate pieces or Red Oak (1" thick, 1/2" thick, and 1" thick again). The three boards are all 4" wide and are fastened together with a high strength bonding agent called "Gorilla Glue" as well as a few wood screws for extra strength.

  1. Secure your second board to your first board (1x4s). Make sure that you create a flush bottom where the post will stand. I personally selected screws that would not penetrate all the way through both boards and stick out the back end. How to Build a Mobile Platform Makiwara
