My grandma used to send me birthday cards addressed to Master James White until I was 12. After that, the cards always said Mister. I thought getting to Mister in one piece was a very big deal, so I ain't going back

The answer to that depends on how you define mastery. If you are an artist, you never call yourself a master and you don't care what anyone else says because it's about creativity and self mastery which no man can define. But if you follow a system and you rely on your instructor's designation you call yourself master when your systems rank says you are one, by promotion and completion of required material.

To me someone who instills the values of TKD in each student, who lives by the tenets of TKD, who inspires each person to acheive their personal best, physically, mentally, and emotionally, and teaches us to be humble by being humble themselves. This is a person who I would call "Master", regardless of dan rank.
