Yes, I get it! One thing about the FMA is that because of the varying weapons you must work in all ranges from the start, but in practice our empty-hand is relatively short-hand.

Are you hoping to learn all of Hung Gar, then?

It's actually Fu-Jow Pai (Tiger Claw) that I will be learning, not sure if I can learn it all ... LOL ... until fairly recent, a person needed to have mastered an art such as Hung Gar to begin learning Fu-Jow Pai, that was changed by GM Wai Hong.

Basically what my instructor is after is to integrate kung fu into the kempo, soften it up a bit. On these boards, I'm sure you've seen the statement, "Where's the kung fu in Shaolin Kempo" ... well I won't necessarily go into it here, but within that system they were questioning, the kung fu was originally in the system, but let go over the years, for the reason that I believe, was to make it easier to teach and learn.

In learning some of the old kung fu forms, I see the kempo forms movements and just now, through the kung fu training, I'm coming to understand those movements, whereas before, I just did the movements cause I was told to do so.

Ah, I see! We've done something similar. Modern Arnis evolved from Balintawak Escrima. We've gone back to learn the original art which has been very enlightening.

I heard before that for some CMAs you must first master a base art before learning the advanced art...that certainly means a looooooooong study time.

I'm also dabbling with sticks, but not as an art really. I'm not even sure of which stick art our movements derived. But sticks, bo and knife have always been the only weapons that have peaked my interest, to me, they are the only practical weapons. It is illegal to carry around a broad sword afterall, but a person can find sticks!! (Let me say here, that I understand what the weapons bring to the arts and that the movements can be done, and effectively, empty hand as well)

Why is it so much harder to get back in shape, once you are there you need to stay there. Man I never ever want to get out of shape again.

You and I are the same age, technically, it is hard enough to stay in shape. It's rediculously hard to get there ... LOL ... I'm finding it harder and harder with my back injury and all.

Yea, it's harder to get back when you're older and life involves so much more. I'm finding it's so much harder to find the time to train now because the class times I used to train in are the ones I now teach in. So I have to make *more* time for martial arts. Making it before was a struggle and it still is from time to time. This is why most BB's get out of shape, I think.

I would have to agree, alot of BB get into teaching and relax on there own training.

Nicely stated. Between injuries, teaching and having a normal 40-hour a week job ... it is hard to find the time, but I'll do it, somehow, someway.

Thanks ... now if I could stop over-eating ... LOL
I think it has to be eating something different that's lower in calories and not containing corn syrup but is still yummy. Dried fruit and nuts with a couple of chocolate chips or yogurt chips. High volume low calorie stuff, ya know?

Yes, I do know ... unfortunately I'm weak ... LOL ... I do realize that if I could simply stick with it for say a week, that it wouldn't be so hard and that each week thereafter would be even easier ... I'll do it, one of these days.

PS: Thanks for the add
