I recall reading that when a child learns to snatch back its hand from a hot frying pan, it quickly forms a pathway that henceforth responds faster than the rational conscious mind can think and respond. It becomes a reflex. Most of us have that one. I believe repetition of martial arts training does the same.

There is good reason to believe that trained responses and muscle memory are valid concepts, but the specific withdrawal reflex that you mention is inborn, not learned.
