I'm interested in anyone who has studied Okinawan Sanchin-Ryu karate to please share any experiences you may have had with Senseis while studying this style of karate. Positive or negative.

Welcome to Martial Talk, student of karate. Hope you enjoy it here.

I’ve studied Okinawan Uechi-Ryu here and there over many years. (In Boston)

I have had nothing but positive experiences with what I consider great teachers and I have wonderful memories of all of it.

Never heard of it. Their website contains no useful information. Sounds like something someone just made up. It must be very popular since there isn't just a grandmaster/s, but a chief grandmaster!. It seems to be more of the name of an organization catering to kids rather than a style, a thing I've had experience with.

Perhaps studentofkarate can provide some solid info beyond what the marketing provides.

Robert H. Dearman is the Chief Grandmaster of Okinawan Sanchin-Ryu. He is the Chief Grandmaster, as he is the founder who developed this style of karate. I believe the style was first developed in 1974?, but don't quote me on the year. Chief Grandmaster Robert Dearman, developed his own style of karate after training with other styles, and it has a lot of Okinawan style karate traits when it comes to stances and techniques, in my opinion. Okinawan Sanchin-Ryu is a style developed for self-defense and not for sparring for points, breaking boards, etc. Okinawan Sanchin-Ryu is also a non-profit organization, which makes the cost of studying this style less expensive.

Is Robert H. Dearman Okinawan?

What other styles did he study and what rank did he achieve in them? What makes Sanchin-ryu different from other Okinawan styles as historically they also were designed for self-defense, not sport? What kata, if any, do they do?

He is not Okinawan himself that I'm aware of.
Then is it legitimate to call it Okinawan Sanshin Ryu? What makes it Okinawan.

I had a look at their (poorly constructed) website and I have to say it looks very suspicious…rather like Gokan Ryu that I had a go at for a few months.

I bet they don’t practise Sanshin šŸ˜‰

Boston is the home of American Uechi Ryu!

Where is Ameridote based?

Sanchin-Ryu means 3 hearts or 3 battles. He did base his on other Okinawan styles, as they designed for self-defense. Sanchin-Ryu focuses on 3 stars of study -- physical, mental, and spiritual. We have 10 basics (strikes and kicks), 10 combined basics advanced, 10 forms and 10 kata. I can get through 1 kata on my own, but I have been exposed to 6, possibly 7 other katas.

I'm not sure what other styles he had studied. I'm not sure if anyone has actually interviewed him in that respect. Personally, I like studying this style, Our kicks and strikes (punches) are done close to our opponent.

I couldn't help but notice you didn't answer any of the questions.

You'll have to ask him if it's legitimate to call it Okinawan. I believe he refers to it as an Okinawan style since it's for self-defense. The website used to be a better website until after COVID. I won't update the website so I can't answer that question. As I said, the style he developed is Sanchin-Ryu and I've know it to be that since the late 90s myself. I studied for several years and took a break for several years.

What is Sanshin Ryu’s USP? For example, one of Wado Ryu’s USPs is its use of nagasu. So what does Sanshin Ryu offer that is fundamentally different from other Okinawan styles?
, as they designed for self-defense.
All traditional Karate styles are, aren’t they?
Sanchin-Ryu focuses on 3 stars of study -- physical, mental, and spiritual.
All Karate styles claim to emphasise those, don’t they?

Sanchin-Ryu means 3 hearts or 3 battles.
The "3 battles fist äø‰ęˆ˜" form is the mother of all southern Chinese martial art.

ā€œSanchin is honored as the mother of all Southern‑style boxing. All boxing begins with Sanchin, and one trains Sanchin for life. Okinawan Goju‑ryu Karate, which comes from Southern Chinese boxing, also uses Sanchin as its very first introductory form.ā€
