Oh, well it’s a video of Funakoshi practising blocks and counters with a student. funakoshi looks like a beginner who’s had 6 month’s practices. His timing is awful, he leans backward his limbs aren’t at nice neat angles.
are there any still pics from that vid ?
Lots of stuff(vids and pics)of old masters in action has surfaced on the net, very much AI generated

ā€œThe more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battleā€

or

"Cry in the dojo, laugh on the battlefieldā€
You wrote it’s something you want to be scribbled on your makiwara.

Maybe : ā€œI still do not yet know the best way to punch the makiwaraā€
- Choki Motobu

"Cry in the dojo, laugh on the battlefieldā€

Thank you for the list of suggestions. I like the ones below:
To address the OP @opr1945 how about…

ā€˜Tomorrow's battle is won during today's practice’

ā€˜Suffer in the dojo, triumph on the battlefield’

ā€˜Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth’ (Mike Tyson)

ā€˜If you're in a fair fight, your tactics are poor’ John Steinbeck

ā€˜Run away if you can, fight dirty if you must’

ā€˜If you're going through hell, keep going.’ — Winston Churchill

I have decided to see if I can get this done by the laser engraver.

"Cry in the dojo, laugh on the battlefieldā€
The phrasing I posed is crude. I apologize. This is much better.

Thank you.

Stenciled this on my "113" medic track, back in the 70s while in Germany.
it's not Japanese

"Born to die, trained to kill".

My squad leader at the time looked at it, and called our platoon sergeant over.
He laughed and told me to paint over that s--t. Not something for a medical squad.

AI suggested it might be translated into this:

ę»ć‚’č¦šę‚Ÿć—ć€å‰£ć‚’ē£Øćć€‚
Shi o kakugo shi, ken o migaku.

"Accept death; polish the sword."

I had this made with the laser. It is etched approximately 1/8" deep. Then my son painted the etched part with red paint. It is one of three styles of Karate offered here in my area. When I get my medical approval to return to Karate I am planning on this style Kouburyu. My plan when I had it made was to place on one side of my garden column. I am rethinking that idea. There is a fence in the east corner where my outdoor makiwara is located. And the side of my wood shed on the north side of the corned area of the location of the makiwara is 15' x 8'. May place in one one of the walls. I will post pitcure when it is finished.

I think you should ask them to redo it; the Karate Do characters at the bottom are slightly smaller than the other kanji which looks odd and the ā€˜kara’ is skewed to one side which looks like it’s drunk.

I agree with everything you said.

However,..........It is my fault. At the library the patron must provide the item to be embossed. In this case it was a piece of scrap wood that I had in my waste barrel. Maybe worth USD $0.50. And it could be repeated on the other side. The patron must also provide the graphics for the machine to copy. I provided the graphic on a thumb drive. I copied and pasted the 3 parts each from a different source. I should reformatted the graphic better. Which I believe I have now learned to do. They just embossed the graphic I provided.

There is not charge for using the laser engraver. After reflecting a bit I believe I will have it redone.

The only people to see it will be myself and my my children and grand children, none of whom have ever a slight curiosity about Karate.

It is my hobby and on my bucket list.

Thanks for the observations.

The formatting areas wood really bug me and keep me up at night!

Why don’t you use a nice bit of timber? A piece of black walnut perhaps? The red would really stand out on Walnut.

Don’t you know any friendly Japanese person who can brush the characters nicely for you? ę²–ēø„åę¦ęµē©ŗꉋ道

The wood is poplar. The store I shop at sells Pine, Poplar and Oak.

No, I do not "...know any friendly Japanese person who can brush the characters nicely for you?" I have a passing acquaintances with one Japanese person who is not interested.

I think I got the graphic fixed, I think. I have an appointment for Tues. See what happens then. going to use the other side of the poplar . Sorry if it keeps you up nights. Thanks.

Let’s have a look at you graphic and we can check it for you. I have a good eye šŸ‘€

I am sorry for the small size, I could not figure out how to make it bigger.
