Good luck, and have fun! Sparring to learn is definitely the right attitude to have
That and I told him I will tap out quickly when the time comes. I'll be teaching myself Chinese wrestling , so I expect nothing but a train wreck lol. But a fun one.
If you are going to learn something new, why not learn BJJ instead of Chinese wrestling?
Chinese wrestling is more along the lines of my fighting philosophy and fighting style, where the goal is to put my opponent on the ground, not to go to the ground with my opponent. The other thing is that I want to show that that kung fu is effective. Specifically Jow Ga. My Theory is that Shuai Jiao is the grappling component of Kung Fu. In order to add validity to this theory I will need to be able to use it with Jow Ga even if it means teaching myself which is going to really interesting in itself, but I think it's doable.
BJJ is well proven and well respected. You should be able to find Gracie JJ close by.
My personal challenge is to show that one can overcome BJJ without learning BJJ. To beat BJJ without taking BJJ would be a great journey, probably full of me typing out, but everything has it's weakness, which I already have a theory about. I'm excited about all the things I can learn since this guy knows TKD, BJJ, and Muay Thai. Lots of good stuff for me to get hit with and to work out a Jow Ga solution for. For me personally I already know I can fight. Been there done it. The question for me in terms of martial arts is Can I fight using Jow Ga Kung Fu?
I never really thought of my Kung Fu through that perspective until you asked me your question. I train Kung Fu to learn how to fight with it vs learning it for self-defense. I can use it for self-defense if I need to but self-defense isn't my main focus when it comes to Kung Fu.
Make sure you make video, I am interested to see CMA vs MMA.
Definitely. I wouldn't miss out on that opportunity. If I pull something off then I may not get an opportunity to pull it off again. When I mess up, then I want a video of it so I can study where I went wrong and how to improve so I don't make the same mistake twice. There was another Muay Thai guy training yesterday. He had some good kicks for an old guy. Some of the kicks gave me some concern. I was more concern about the speed than the power. The power wasn't intimidating probably because I know how to neutralize the power. Speed on the other hand, isn't as easy.
But yes I will record and I will do my best to represent Jow Ga Kung Fu.
