At our school we are lucky in this regard. We are located in a gymnastics studio. If one of our students wants to learn how to do a kip up, or any other kind of gymnsastics move, we have a specialist right there, not just someone who happens to know how to do that particular stunt.

I recomend finding a gymnastics coach to teach you. They might charge you for an hour of private lessons, but they'll teach you not only the technique, but the priciples behind it. And the quality of the instruction will be much better.

I taught myself on a high jump pad. I must warn you that kip-ups are only cool for impressing your friends. If you think its a good idea in a fight, it is best you never learn to do it.

I have never found an effective use of the kip up myself other then like was already said to impress someone.. I am 6'3" and depending on the day and what my cardio is doing weigh between 250-270. Of course I first learned to do kip ups when I was less then 100 pound kid in gymnastics classes..
the key is you have to get your feet under you, and get you body moving forward. It does not take much once you have your feet under you to rock upward with the momentum going

I would definitely not use kip up in any kind of martial practice, just to clear the air. It doesn't matter to me if someone sees me sees me do it, I just personally think it's cool. Neat physical feat. I've always wanted to do one.. just a personal goal of mine, thats all.

Did not know it was a gymnastics move, or that one could take lessons for such a thing. Didn't know it was that involved.

Thanks for the tips, though. I may cheat and one day just use a trampoline..

Reading this thread I see no one really answered your question. Since I haven't seen you try to do it its kind of hard to direct you. So I'm gonna guess here and say that you are trying to do this with pure leg force,I.e. throwing your legs forward. A lot of people can't do this because the hands are very involved in helping you up. So when you bring your legs back to do this put your hands by your ears like as if you are trying to bridge up, when you kick your legs forward use your hands to push off at the same time to propell your top half up so your feet get under you.

Right right that's where I lose the coordination.. I put my hands up, first, and set em. Then I put my legs up and kick, try to push off with my hands at the same time and sometimes I land on my feet-- but I'm usually not forward enough and I'll rock back. I hadn't thought of putting my hands up as I put my legs up, using that rock back to get momentum to rock forward. I'll give it a go here in an hour or so

you do not need to use your hands at all. I do not use my hands at all.
the hands can help get you some extra spring, but they are completely unnecessary.
seriously, roll up on you rupper back, let your legs come up over your head, then use lower back and abs to spring your legs upward and forward as you arch your back, as your legs go forward bend at the knees and try to put your feet under your butt as your body is moving down towards your knees. once your feet are planted under you, borrow the momentum going forward to stand up. You do not need to get very high in the air, the important part is getting your feet under you.

Don't feel bad if you learn/practice it on a trampoline. That's where the gymnasts start learning it.

I taught myself to do it with out the hands, and if there is one thing that telegraphs a Kip UP, its the hands behind the ear thing..

Maybe the hips are playing an issue. Just a thought, but if you try it without the hands, roll back all the way on to your head with your legs and body right over the top. Then simply kicks out, and your whole body should come flying forward. I sometimes have to much momentum and can't stop.

I did try it without the hands-- used a rocking motion and put more focus on getting my feet under me than kicking them up. I was able to rock forward and stand quickly, but no pop. I want that little hop. But I felt closer to it pulling my feet back in towards me as opposed to high and out away from me.

I'm thinking this is one of those things like a flip of a sort, may have to do it first on a trampoline to get the feel of it before I can execute it solo.

I did try that, my body ended up behind my head.

Though, I am intrigued.. thinking about it, makes sense. Sounds like it requires a bit of neck strength and balance doing it this way

I was in high school, and the high jump pads were everywhere.

Yes the hands are not nessecary, but that is the easy way and the way to build up to doing it with no hands. I mean u learn to ride a bike with your hands on the handle bars first then some move to unicycles and riding regular bikes with no hands. Same here.
As far as telegraphing the kip up, that was already covered a kip up is not ideal for a fight. And I assume the op is not just going around getting into fights. It was about the kip up only not its obvious ineffectivity in combat.
To the op, try getting the kip up using your hands first then work towards no hands.

Nobody told me that when I was learning. I have never even tried using my hands; so, I'm not sure how to work them in to the equation. LOL

I used a kip up in fights and grappling and sparring.Try it when you're explosively pushing somebody away with your legs to whatever reason. If you Granby someone imperfectly, they grab your legs...kick them off and merge the kick off with the kip up.The ability to do it sans hands is very effective here because you need your hands NOW to be up to guard and attack.I've done it when launching people from my guard in any direction; it's always fun to land with your feet, knees,or foot and knee, floating knee,whatever...upon some guy.Knocks the air right out of them or they panic scramble to get away and thereby give you opportunites to finish them.

The ability to kip up in any direction is also a good surprise to pull on someone when you're scrambling, sprawling,or getting your roll escape on.I remember one time pulling a kip up which looked like a half-front handspring off on a guy who shot deep on the double and I sprawled and he tried to turn the corner,I scrambled on him and shot from much closer in again and BANG kip up off of his back.He shot directly into nothing but air,and I landed behind him and got his back which lead to the choke.
