Classical Fighting Arts Magazine?

It's been a long time since I saw a new issue of Classical Fighting Arts at the newsstands. I was at a Barnes and Noble today and they had the same one that's been there for months. Are they having financial trouble? I saw nothing about it at their web site.

I dunno... I'm a subscriber, but it's been several months since I got my last issue. Arni, do you recall what the month was on that issue you saw? I'm starting to wonder myself about them....

I saw on their site that the new issue is due this month. I believe its every 3 months with them.

Ah, OK. I seem to fallen off the edge of their subscriber list, but that's probably a separate problem, then. Thanks for the info, BF!

OK, I was just at a bookstore that usually carries it, and now I am definitely starting to wonder...if JAMA had to go subscription-only, then surely this will too?

Ah, from their website:

In the past Classical Fighting Arts…

magazine could be found mainly in branches of Borders Books & Music, Barnes & Noble, Tower Books and Hastings stores. From now on it will also be available through specialist retailers and newstands throughout the United States and Canada. Many more martial arts supplies stores are also selling CFA Magazine so if you can't find a copy at your bookstore try a local martial arts supply company. The most reliable way still to get CFA magazine is through a subscription.

I was at a Borders when I was looking for it.

I have a subscription, dammit, and I still haven't seen a copy in months!

I gotta call them and find out what's going on....

It looks like a lot of these publications are going to go subscription only. Worst thing about that is that the post office treats magazines horribly so you don't know what condition your copy will arrive in.

I think the worst thing would be paying for a subscription and the publication go's out of business. I have subscriptions to two martial arts magazines paid for 3 years in advanced. I may need to rethink doing that in the future.

I'm beginning to wonder if that's what's happened to me—I paid for two years of CFA and I'm not sure if they're still in operation, at this point... :uhohh:

CFA is supposed to have a new issue coming out. Like a lot of small publications, I think they have trouble sticking to deadlines. Check the website and drop them an email.

I used to subscribe far ahead because of the savings. Got burned a couple of times so I don't do that anymore. A year at a time will suffice for me!

In contradiction to what I posted above about it not being available in most bookstores, I now see this:

The new issue of CFA magazine (Vol 2. No. 15 Issue#38) will be on the racks of 1500 major books stores Including Borders Books, Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, and Hastings, all across the United States in January. This issue is in full color on glossy paper, is perfect bound, and has 80 pages of the highest possible quality written material on the classical martial arts of Japan, Okinawa and China.

No. 15 is later than I've seen--I think the last one I saw at the stands was #12 or maybe #14 (the covers are somewhat similar), and that page claims #14 was mailed on 28 July of last year to subscribers. (That matches the suspicion that they're falling behind their schedule.)

Classical Fighting Arts magazine is now available at 400 more Barnes & Noble locations than previously, a direct response by one America's largest magazine retailers to increasing sales of CFA through their stores.

Well, I'll look forward to hearing whether or subscribers get their issue this month!

Well, I saw #14 at a Waldenbooks in the mall tonight so I take heart that it's still carried, even if #15 is not yet here!

The Borders at Carousel Mall in Syracuse NY today also had an older issue... but as I said, the general selection of MA mags just appears smaller. (Now, Yoga themed magazines seem to be exploding everywhere.)

John Ding's Tai Chi and Alternate Health was still present, as was the Tai Chi from Wayfairer.
