I suppose you could say in some cases I am beating a dead horse if people continually refuse to get my points.
Having said that, in all honesty, it's fine to have a few duplicate discussions, respectfully, I think you need to be more cogniscent of the fact that it's possible to understand fully what you say and still disagree with it. You're not alone in this, and you are in good company- it's a failing common to most of our politicians.

Do you think it's possible for someone to understand your points and also disagree with your points?
Yes and as a matter of fact it would be impossible to disagree with somebody's point without getting it. Before you can agree or disagree with a point you have to know what it is you're agreeing or disagreeing with.
If so, how would that look different to you than someone refusing to get your point?
All too often I will try to use analogies to make points. When I do so, some people on this forum will change my analogy by adding to it or by some other means, that shows they're not getting my point. If they got my point they would leave my analogy the way it is.

Yep, because either you do not understand or are not explaining yourself well enough.
You're partially right, but it can also be because people don't understand me or they take what I say out of context or because they don't listen (or in this case, read, since we're talking about message boards where you don't talk out loud.)

"people don't understand me or they take what I say out of context"

See, this is EXACTLY what me and many others have just said. This is a YOU problem, NOT everyone else.

I understand what you mean. I use a lot of analogies, too. If someone is rephrasing your analogy and it isn't quite the same, it can feel like they're shifting goalposts.

Sometimes, though, they do understand your analogy and are building on it. Extending or building on an analogy is how people try to communicate that they are listening to you and understand you, while also pushing back on your argument.

It can be hard to tell the difference, but it's important to be on the lookout.

I think it's more like dogs and cats trying to get along. Some cats and dogs are great friends, but it takes a little work. This forum is mostly cats. :)

Exactly what a couple of cats would say. 😂
many years ago I was at this seminar thing, or possiblhy it was an early online type meeting, for the life of me I don't remember why. I remember the speaker wanted us to write down what animal do we see ourselves as, why and what is it doing.....At the time thinking, this is silly and I want no part of this.... I wrote down nothing. But then sometime later, on a sunny warn day while I was out for a walk after lunch, while at work. That question popped into my head and so did an answer.... A bear, sitting in a cave watching dragons play in the rain...no idea why, no idea what it means...but whatever that thing I was at was for...that is all I got out of it....

No one refused to get your points. You just don't like we don't always agree with you so you keep banging on until we agree, which doesn't happen or we stop reading what you write.

You asked a question, so I’ll try to give you some constructive feedback. Why do folks get aggravated? I think it’s because, at times, it comes across as if you’re not really listening to what people are saying. When you respond, it can look like you’re repeating the same points without acknowledging new information or adjusting to what others have offered. I’m not saying that’s your intention, but that’s the impression some people get — and it’s why they lose patience.

When you ask questions, people take time to answer, and no one likes feeling as though their time isn’t being valued.

For what it’s worth, I’m with Buka — keep doing your thing. I just hope you keep this in mind when you respond to people going forward.

Well that's just the thing, it can be hard to tell the difference because sometimes there might not be much difference, if there's even any difference at all. When you build on an analogy you are in fact reshaping it to a certain extent because after you build on it it isn't the same.

It sometimes makes me want to stop using analogies altogether and just get straight to the point.

Sometimes to do miss my points, at least some people on the forum do.

But anyway I haven't seen you on here for awhile, welcome back.

There’s a principle in improv called “yes, and”. Have you heard of it?

“Yes, and” is a core principle from improvisational theater. The idea is to accept what’s given (“yes”) and then build on it (“and”) to add something new that moves things forward.

I believe that most people who are tweaking your analogy are doing this.
