They played a dangerous game I think... pretending to discontinue the Whopper. Some people actually looked on the verge of committing a serious act of violence.
Even more so when they switched burgers... trading Wendys or McDonald's burgers for what they ordered.
Whew!
It's funny though. And a brilliant marketing scheme.

I thought it was stupid... but then, I don't eat fast food, either!

It was all staged at a BK in Vegas, they had it on the news here in NY a couple nights ago. People did get pretty pissed, what they showed in the commercials was the best of it. Personally, selling burgers by screwing with your customers, no matter how few or in what location is bad, shows really how little you do case about your customers.

Well basically it's a gimmick. Just like the Happy Meals were/are for McDonalds. A gimmick to sell more.
Their way of thinking would be: if we said that we are discontinuing Whoppers... would that make people rush out to our stores and see if it's true and would they buy more?
No fast food restaurant would be in their right mind to change their menu or whatever formula works.
Imagine... how fast KFC would go under if they changed the recipe to their world famous chicken? Even just a little bit and then decided to go back? It'd ruin them. No matter how much they would spend on advertising to assure the customer that it is the original recipe and not the new one, once tainted... it's over.
But playing mind games like BK did...

I guess they figured that anyone who liked the burgers enough to throw a temper tantrum liked them enough to keep buying them if BK messed with them a bit.

*snicker* look at all the junkies freaking out over not being able to get their fix...

Good testament for showing how a lot of people really do get addicted to that crap.

I find those commercials terribly annoying but I'm embarrassed to say that I find myself craving a Whopper now. I haven't eaten at a fast food restaurant in years but I seriously considered going to BK the other day. Maybe the commercials are doing their job.

Yep

I haven't eaten there after I worked at 2 local locations.

I stopped eating McD after working there.

I stopped shopping at a local supermarket after I worked there.

I eat and shop where I can pretend they have, hygiene.

No, I haven't eaten at a McD's either since I quit.

Other places... well, I try not to think about it. Helps the appetite.

Somewhat.

Not me. I look at it as training for my immune system.

I watched what they said was the Whopper freakout online, and I did'nt see anyone "freakout". I watched some who were mildly annoyed cause they thought they were being messed with by the employees, and some who expressed bewilderment as to why BK would discontinue thier "flagship" sandwich. I think BK played up the true "freakout" angle to get people talking, and look it worked.
