The first time the belt tip pops you in the eye you will run out and buy a shorter belt. Trust me.

I had a reallllly long blue belt in Seido for a while, and would have swapped it for a shorter one but for the 9th Dan who gave it to me. It always found my right eye, stung like crazy, and always came completely out of the blue (no pun intended) as well. :lol:

Just get the belt size that matches the dobak you are wearing. I have a size 7 dobak and I wear a size 7 belt.

then you are lucky, I have not found the belt length to match the uniform size.

Now that you mentioned you'd be doing it for poomsae competition, shorter(mid thigh at the longest) is probably better than longer (to the knee or below). Since you've heard stirrings about it in the poomsae community, there maybe "strong encouragement" or " common appreciation" for shorter belt length.
