He loves photography and has a good "eye" actually. He has had his own small cheap 35mm point and shoot for 3 or 4 years now, and the wife and I figured it would be cheeper to get him a digital and save the processing costs of the film. Plus he gets instant gratification of being able to see his shots right away on the display. He is a kid that saves his allowance for what he wants. He bought himself a portable DVD player a year ago with birthday money and allowance he save a couple of years, and is now putting it away for a laptop computer to help when he reaches middle school in a few years. He has been torn between continued hording his loot for the laptop or dipping into his savings to get a digital camera, so....

Hey look over on MSN today they are talking about $100 laptops coming out next year. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/LowCostComputerReadyBySummer.aspx?GT1=8995
I do not know how good it will be but laptop prices seem to be coming down overall. Have him save those dollars!

In all reality, how good does a laptop need to be for a kid to use for school work. It's not like he is going to playing the latest Shooter game on it (Dear old Dad would take it off if it were on there.) :)

Thanks for the link!

What will probably happen is that when the wife finishes her Biology degree and (fingers crossed) gets into the MSU Med program we will get her a new more powerful laptop to do her thing on and he will get the one she uses now. That way he can roll the price of a laptop into a mutual fund and keep it for when he really needs it as an adult.

Now that really is a good idea!

Not too bad... I took my car in for an oil change, and they found a leaky oil gasket (which didn't surprise me much - I'd seen drops of oil on the driveway), so that cost me nearly $200 when I was planning on just an oil change... still, much better than having an oil leak no one finds and having the engine seize up! How're you today, Terry?
