Yellow Belt
hi guys. So,this is still in my head, but i would like to hold a 3 Day Seminar for Master Dong's White Crane as it applies to karate.
I hope to acomplish the following:

1. hold the seminar at reasonable price for everyone
2. spend a day on each part of the program ( Day 1- the kata, Day 2 bunkai , Day 3 -"listening" hands)
3. each day would start with sifu's special 12 Hojo Undo
4. A certificate of completion ceremony on the night of the last day.
5. Certificate of completion participants can incorporate Master Dong's White Crane into their dojo curriculum.

Most likely location would be Athens, GA area. I will gauge responses to this post to go ahead with finding the location.
Thank you all.
Randy

yeah thats why i want to limit it to blackbelts only, people who have already earned there place.

May I ask a few cynical questions here.....?

a 3 Day Seminar for Master Dong's White Crane as it applies to karate.
1. What type of Karate? There are many types and styles of Karate... many of which are very different in their approach. It's kind of like saying "I want to teach Kenkojuku Shotokan Karate as it applies to Kung Fu..."

2. What are your qualifications for Karate? I believe you have the chops for teaching White Crane..... But what if I wanted to teach Danzan Ryu as it applies to Master Dong's White Crane? Since I have never trained Master Dong's White Crane.... I may get a few things very wrong.....

Certificate of completion participants can incorporate Master Dong's White Crane into their dojo curriculum.
3. You are going to give me 3 days of instruction.... and then allow me to teach Master Dong's White Crane? This may be because you don't know me so well.... but I guarantee you I will bastardize your White Crane, beyond all recognition in a month.... Not because I am trying to..... but because 3 days is not nearly enough for me to learn a new skill well enough to teach it.

To me, those would be red flags. However, if you wanted to do a 3 day seminar on Master Dong's White Crane.... and even hand out certificates for completing the seminar... that would interest me. If I like what I learn and want to teach it.... I would want to put sufficient time into learning it.... 3 days is not sufficient time. I have seen other arts try this weekend training and get a teaching certificate for the new art thing before. The results have never been good... unfortunately it colors my view of the art that is offering the 3 day teaching certification....

Just my 2 cents here....

Your questions are not cynical at all and are well founded.
1. many feel my teachers style is a mother style to some karate.i think you will find that to be true.
2. this is is not my teacher's system. it is an abbreviated abstract that people may find useful to shed light on their own style. the whole system is 6 kata, 2weapons, a two man set, 12 listening hands. This is just an abbreviation.
3. the certificate is more of a certificate of participation ,but i would rather people teach like that then the real bastardization that has been happening for the past decade. its a method of reinging this in a little.
4. so alittle correction, it wouldnt be danzenryu as it applies to Dong White Crane. its using Dong white crane to understand Danzenryu possibly better.

i believe Sifu's style can enhance anyone's understanding of their own art.And i beleive i have something to offer the martial arts community. Sifu taught me many many things in our time together, most of it on how to live and be a good person. He was as close to a grandpa as I've had. I treasure those times.

i like him too.
As a consequence of viewing this video, I bought Martin Watt’s book to make a deeper comparison between White Crane and Wado Ryu Karate because my impression is that Wado Ryu is closer to Okinawan karate in form, but is performed in a distinctly ‘Japanese style’. There are indeed interesting parallels and similarities rather like there are similarities between ‘delta blues guitar ’ and ‘instrumental shred guitar’. Interesting as this comparison was, I personally wouldn’t want to listen/play delta blues! As a shred guitarist, I probably would pick up a few delta blues ideas after attending a 3 day course but would be in no position to teach those ideas.

May I ask, what’s the advantage of your bastardisation over that which has been ‘happening over the last decade’?

Its not a bastardization, its a CRYSTALIZATION of the main points FROM our system that might be useful to yours,FROM ACTUAL STUDENT THAT WAS WITH HIM FOR 7 PLUS YEARS. Also i'm not doing it for gain, but to honor my sifu by teaching as i think he would want. By your definition wado ryu is a bastardization.

Sooo, you have a whopping 7-years of training? And you want to be responsible for someone's whole system? Noble, but good luck with that.
It is awesome that you want to 'honor your Sifu', it truly is. But, I hope your Sifu would say you are going about it all wrong. Unless you have patents or trademarks, there is Nothing you can effectively do in any lasting way when it comes to someone claiming they are the 'pure blood'. We have seen this for decades in the martial arts and the results have always ended up hurting in the long run (think Joe Lewis).
Sorry, but this dog just will not hunt.

You misunderstood... My seminar, the one I teach, would be a seminar on Danzan Ryu and how it applies to Dong White Crane. Yes, that would be me teaching something I know and showing how it applies to some art I have before trained in..... Which is the same thing you are doing by trying to teach me Dongs White Crane to better understand an art you have never trained in.... (also an art that does not trace back through Karate to any form of White Crane). Just like you find it a little presumptuous of me to help you understand your art through mine.... it is just as presumptuous for you to try to improve my art with yours.

If you want to honor your art and your teacher.... teach a seminar on your art. Let those who come apply what they learn to their own art. I also would not hand out teaching certification after 3 days. I would not have enough understanding to preserve your art after just 3 days... even if I was trying to.

You trained with your sifu for only seven years (plus)? That’d be the equivalent of say a second or third Dan in Karate? Not a high grade by any means. Is that about right?

Wado Ryu is an evolution of Okinawan Karate.

Bastardisation refers to the act of corrupting, debasing or spoiling something resulting in an inferior lower quality of the original. I’m sure you don’t mean that.

You may get the feeling there’s a bit of resistance to your idea of you teaching a White Crane seminar to inform Karate Dan grades on their own art. It’s because you haven’t trained in any significant amount in Karate, if at all. Then offer participation certificates as though they’ll have some sort of kudos in the martial world, never mind suggesting the commencement of an unbecoming net war in another thread…Can you see how that all looks?

Anyway, best of luck with your endeavours. La conversación se termine…

i wouldnt want you learning anyway.

and its 7 years under Master Dong, and 20 years experience teaching so go love yourself and the french guy you're defending.

Not knowing the OP's full situation, I'll say this in general. If one is already a 2nd or 3rd dan and then spends 7 years with the master, great strides can be realized.

I think this is 1/2 right. It would be presumptuous to claim being able to inform someone of how crane can be used to incorporate it into their karate without knowing karate. However, if that someone is already into their karate dans, attending a crane seminar can provide them opportunity to discover their own insights on how to incorporate it into their style (as it's part of the karate historical stream).

I wonder if the OP has ever been to a karate seminar where the presenter (with no crane expertise) has informed him how to improve his white crane?

karate comes from crane not vice versa.
