R. "Joe" Manley

My instructor, Joe Manley, passed away earlier this month. Joe was a pioneer in the Bando System, one of the original students of Dr. Gyi, and a legend on the tournament floor in the 60s. He truly lived the Bando maxim that Bando teaches you life, and his lessons in so many areas beyond martial arts were a great influence on me. He taught us to focus on the little things, and that mastery of the basics is the only way to truly master anything.

R.I.P. Despite growing up in an area rich in Bando (mid Ohio Valley, about an hour from Dr. Gyi), I never learned about it until my late teens. My best friend trained under Coach Tom Hogan while we were in college. It's an interesting art. I believe he started with the Bull, and then I think it was a constrictor snake? and then maybe a tiger? I can't quite remember, I just remember it was an animal style, and that my friend's staff was an 8' piece of Ironwood he had to source himself from the woods.
