Sometimes I feel like I’m instinctively sparring less intense when paired with a woman.

Yes she is, that’s what makes it even more awkward getting paired with her, or most women.

Generally if the other person is smaller, you match their intensity. It's a good opportunity to work on technique instead of brute forcing wins.
