and any attempt to justify this money-grab by saying it motivates students to continue training doesn't speak very highly of the training itself holding the interest of the student.
Plus black belts should be mentally strong enough to motivate themselves, which also reflects upon the school and its training.
There are a lot of people who, ordinarily, would continue on well past the first Dan if the cost wasn't so absurd for some of these organizations. You've got the cost of the cert, the testing fees, the seminar fees, the recertification scam, the gup-between-the-Dan-grade scam etc. For some of these schools/orgs the cost can be off the chain. The motivation may be there, but some just can't afford to stay around due to the cost.
