CMA roundhouse kick

The CMA roundhouse kick is different from the TKD roundhouse kick and the MT roundhouse kick. It doesn't pull back as the TKD method. It doesn't use instep or shin bone as the MT method.

What's your opinion on this?

I do that kick but have always considered it more of a teep than a round kick.

Yeah. If I can insert my big toe into their liver it will hurt people.

Round kicks change a lot across style based on the target/goal of the kick
karate usually targets the midline
muay thai targets the leg
TKD targets the head
savate uses a steel tipped shoe
mma likes power, so they typically spin through the kick
the goal changes the mechanics, timing, and power of the kick

I wouldn't want to get hit by it......low into the thigh or knee could be disabling rendering your opponents stability and balance impaired....

It looks like it hits with the inside arch of the foot (hard to tell in the video) with the hips more square to the target which is typically called a Crescent kick (inward) in TKD and serves a different purpose than the round kick usually.

I'd agree that it looks more like our (NGA) crescent kick, as well.

Agree with others that it's kind of cross between a crescent kick and a roundhouse. A true crescent kick should have the toes vertical, while a roundhouse should have the foot more horizontal.
Agree! It's easier to do a high crescent kick than to do a high roundhouse kick because the vertical toes vs. the horizontal toes (or vertical knee vs. horizontal knee).

The crescent kick only requires forward split. The roundhouse kick requires side split which is much harder.

Looks like a dance :)
Use a back fist and pull your opponent's blocking arm when you do a roundhouse kick is a good set up.

The difference between MA solo training and dancing is the combat intend. With combat intend, it's not dancing.

This is why a traffic cop cannot become a MA person because the lack of combat intend.

What does that even mean???
This is the difference between you train solo

- with imaginary opponent, or
- without imaginary opponent.

If you train solo with imaginary opponent, your solo training should be the same as your partner training.

I still have no idea what that has to do with a traffic cop.

I don't know either! But I'll hazard a guess... I assume you are referring to when John said:

"This is why a traffic cop cannot become a MA person because the lack of combat intend."

My old Escrima instructor used to say that in a real, violent assault, don't be merciful. Before going on, he would ask if there were any cops in the room, because what he was about to demonstrate was probably neither ethical or legal for police work, but it just might save your life.

FWIW, he was talking about attitude and intent more than about some idiotic, "deadly" techniques. That was his perception of applying MA. Not about safely controlling someone, or worrying about a "use of force continuum", but about survival.

Perhaps John was making a similar point?

To move your hand and point to a direction is different from throwing a punch and knock down your opponent.

You may replace traffic cop with ballet dancer, it won't make any difference.

The following Q&A states the difference between "understand in your head" vs. "be able to do on your body".

A: What's the difference between a scholar and a MA person?
B: When a scholar tries to answer a 10 questions test, he may start from question 1. When he has difficult to answer question 4, he may skip question 4 and go to question 5. After he has finished all the other 9 questions, he many come back to question 4. When someone stabs a knife toward a MA guy, that MA guy may have 1/2 second to respond correctly. If he responds correctly, he may survival. Otherwise, he may die.

I don't think the torture porn teaching method really works that well by the way.
