I learn the Martial Arts at USSD, and I am a Blue-Green belt. I'm fairly young, but that doesn't mean I can't love Kempo!
But, I have a question. I saw a girl at my same rank, and she had a bow-staff. I asked Sensei if I could learn weapons, and he said, "If you do all your you Pinans (1, 2, 3) and Katas (1, 2) without messing up, I'll cosider teaching you weapons." So today at my private lesson, I did just that, and now he says if next lesson I know all my DMs well, he'll teach me weapons. So I'm very excited, but what are some things I should know about the bow staff? And is it a fun and interesting weapon to use? He offered to teach me the Katana or Twin Blades (Something like that, they look like Scimitars a bit). I chose Bow-Staff because I saw the other Blue-Green belt with it, and I assumed I should start off with it. So, If you can tell me some stuff about learning weapons for the first time, I would love that!

If you really train with USSD, then why are you in American Kenpo on your other thread posts? They aren't the same thing. BTW, what about Pinan 4? What Dm's do you have? You should serioulsy leave it up to your instructor to tell you about the weapon you are learning...not a forum. That is disrespectful to your instructor.

oooohhh...A Nirvana fan, well, I totally agree with gufbal, it is not up to us what weapon you should train with , it is up to your instructor.... you should train with both, a bo staff and a katana (that has a blunt blade). I suggest a blunt blAde because, I train in ninjutsu and when i started training with weapons, i was handed a sword 6 weeks into my weapons training with a bow, and accidently sliced my hand and my wrist half way through a weapon kata I was tought.

If you decide to train with a sword, i suggest you do your movements very slowly and gradully build up your speed....I dont think you would want any accidents...

Just as a side note it is up to your instructor about you weapon of choice, but if you aaproach your instructor with the proper respect and talk to him about what you feel you would like to learn then he maybe able to accomidate you.

If you want to learn Kendo by any of its names I'd suggest you go with a specialist. If you instructor is qualified to teach the Japanese sword arts that would be great. If his only training is through your Kempo organization you might be better served by finding someone who is certified through the ZNKR or some other reputable tradition. That would, of course, be something for you and your instructor to talk about when he thinks you are far enough along to cross-train without screwing yourself up.

Hello, The bo staff is an excellant weapon to learn. On the streets any stick, broom, long pole, can be use like a staff.

A short version will be a walking stick.

All weapons are extension of our hands...you will find it helping in your free hand fighting. (it may take a while..but you will understand this later).

We use many different types of weapons, one reason is because of the traditions, and also just to be familar with them, Plus many things can be subsituted too.

Weapons are fun and useful....enjoy every moment........Aloha
