It sounds like a very obvious and funny question. I talked on other forums few years back when I was so into pocket knives and I was really surprised the knives people chose.
To me, pocket knives are for:
1) Self defense.
2) Survival in difficult situation like in car accident that you have to cut and ply yourself out of the jam.
3) Emergency situation where you need to cut something on the spot.
But from the knives people choose, it actually feels like it's a fashion, like handbags, ear rings or some decorate items. I can give one simple example. One popular knife brand is Spyderco, some are expensive, looks unique. BUT if you analyze the knife, to me, IT'S A PIECE OF $HIT, for essential life saving purpose.
1) Has a big hole at the bottom of the blade that makes it a weak point. I've seen they broke right at that point when they just ply anything. I even saw someone drop and broke the blade on youtube.
2) There is no finger protection if you use it for shanking(thrusting straight into the body of the opponent.) You need a longer protrusion at the bottom to keep the knife from being shoved into your hand like the picture.

I heard a lot of talking like "Oh, I use it to cut food, open boxes, open envelopes and all that. WHY? you have food knives, or box cutters for those. To me, EDC is for Self defense and survival in emergency situation.
I own a lot of folding knives, The ones that passed my test are all not expensive and they definitely good for self defense and survival.
Just want to hear from others.
