It sounds like a very obvious and funny question. I talked on other forums few years back when I was so into pocket knives and I was really surprised the knives people chose.

To me, pocket knives are for:
1) Self defense.
2) Survival in difficult situation like in car accident that you have to cut and ply yourself out of the jam.
3) Emergency situation where you need to cut something on the spot.

But from the knives people choose, it actually feels like it's a fashion, like handbags, ear rings or some decorate items. I can give one simple example. One popular knife brand is Spyderco, some are expensive, looks unique. BUT if you analyze the knife, to me, IT'S A PIECE OF $HIT, for essential life saving purpose.
1) Has a big hole at the bottom of the blade that makes it a weak point. I've seen they broke right at that point when they just ply anything. I even saw someone drop and broke the blade on youtube.
2) There is no finger protection if you use it for shanking(thrusting straight into the body of the opponent.) You need a longer protrusion at the bottom to keep the knife from being shoved into your hand like the picture.

I heard a lot of talking like "Oh, I use it to cut food, open boxes, open envelopes and all that. WHY? you have food knives, or box cutters for those. To me, EDC is for Self defense and survival in emergency situation.

I own a lot of folding knives, The ones that passed my test are all not expensive and they definitely good for self defense and survival.

Just want to hear from others.

Yes, most people only need a pair of scissors for their daily needs, but their machismo leads them to a knife.

Luckily I live in a place where using a knife for self-defence isn’t a need and again, a pair of scissors is just as effective and perhaps less conspicuous.

I’ll be honest and say I’m simply like unusual knives and they seem to be made by a small group of manufacturers.

You carry this? I am talking about EDC. You don't need to worry about self defense? Where do you live?

Oh no! I’n the UK you can be arrested for carrying and aggressively using a toothpick in public which is why it’s safe to walk around at night (except in the fleshpots of London).

There will be place in the world where a large kukuri is and EDC…countries you don’t want to visit!😳

Then it's a different story, I am talking about EDC ( every Day Carry)

I love that pocket knife with awesome inscription

In my edge lord days I bought a Spyderco Gunting because I believed in the idea of a defensive knife. And thought this was the defensivest.

I mean it isn't. But I still have it. And now it is super rare and worth something.

Otherwise I now mostly carry a cold steel ultimate hunter.

Which is just a really nice knife.

The only reason I do not carry a knife that expensive is because I am rough on just about every hand tool and lose more than I care to admit. I keep my knife on a pocket clip for many reasons. The tradeoff is it can get snagged on occasion and spring the clip, making it too easy to release and easier to just fall off. Sometimes.
I literally have to be suspended upside-down while working sometimes and just need to be able to reach a tool quickly. If you have ever had to troubleshoot overhead panels or dig hay out of a jammed baler, you understand. Knives, tools, even two wedding rings are buried somewhere in my hay fields. So, a Klein folding knife with utility blades is my goto.
I may not cut you deep, but I get get a lot of stabs in! ;)
