Trying to understand

I think that the mindset of today is one of conflicting desires. People want a black belt and to 'know karate' but they don't want to put forth the work to get their. After all, they work or go to school all day, so there isn't much energy left for a martial art. I find very few people who take up martial arts for self defense, taekwondo in particular.

Also, the mindset of the blackbelt has gone from a hard won mark of skill to an entitlement in return for paying money and time in grade. And it collectively us who are to blame. Nobody would have ever gotten this mindset if it hadn't been made possible by school owners looking to increase enrollment and retention by locking people in for lengthy times and making promises with time parameters.
