New journey - Shotokan Karate

I’m not sure I understand what you mean.

It shows the essential difference between actual martial ways and gendai Budo (modern combat sports). Where the art was used in true lethal combat, the attitude was to kill one’s enemy or potentially be killed by them. Hundreds of years of practical use, in lethal situations, by the warrior caste, informed them that one must take any and every opportunity to dispatch the enemy; warfare is a distasteful activity.

Gendai combat sports were not forged in that martial milieu (although they were vaguely based upon it) and they were purposely marinated in Zen Buddhist morality to make them more palatable to the squeamish, non-combatant commoner and eventually, the occupying forces.

Well, you are Slightly better than half right.

I posted a few weeks back about starting Shotokan Karate. As stated, I do not talk about my past involvement in martial arts. Some of my past training and involvement would probably spark more discussion. I am also taking FMA Kali, and I have been posting more on that forum on the site here. I am an older guy, and as I mentioned before, I do have a few health issues. Past injuries from certain work areas in my life are a bit harder on me now.

The main thing I want to be clear about is that I am practicing Shotokan Karate for health first, mental clarity, and because it also helps with self defense. I will not debate anyone here about these things. All three, health, mental clarity, and self defense, apply to me. Everyone is different, and Shotokan Karate or other martial arts may not apply to you and your needs... that really up to you as an individual.

I can honestly say that I have seen great improvements so far. While I do exercise using other methods, since starting over the past weeks I have lost some weight. Not a lot, and certainly not up for discussion... but I have.

The other things I had forgotten over the years have come back as well.. The mental clarity and also reducing anxiety. These are benefits I had long forgotten about, and I am happy that I started Shotokan Karate. I also do not care about being on the lower ranking kyu side. I am just happy that Shotokan Karate is making a difference in my life.
