This news item makes it clear the need for situational awareness, being aware of threats in your vicinity at all times.

Man assaulted, nearly robbed in Fredericksburg at Brock's
Police are looking for a man they say assaulted and attempted to rob another man who was near his car at Brock’s restaurant in Fredericksburg.

An employee of Brock’s told police he was outside of his car in the back parking lot when a man approached him from behind and assaulted him by grabbing his head and striking it repeatedly against the side of the car. During the assault, the suspect yelled at the victim to give up his wallet, police said.

The victim fought back, and during the ensuing struggle he was cut by a knife that the suspect had in his hand. The suspect ended up dropping the knife and running from the area without getting any of the victim’s property, according to the Fredericksburg Police Department.

You may not always be able to detect every potential threat, and this is an unusual type of robbery where the assault happens before the demand for money, but it shows that these things can happen.

Awareness in general in our everday life would go a long way in keeping us safer. This type of everday awareness as we move through our daily activites is something a lot of peoplejust don't have.

Now add this to the OP and it will start to become a naturel experiance........

Don't put yourself in bad situations needlessly and trust your instincts. If you are aware of your surroundings and the people in them, at the very least you will look less like a victim. That is important.

Remember, people are not the only things that can hurt/kill you. Animals, vehicles, shoddily stacked lumber, are also dangers...

Big Don makes a good point. Situational awareness is an important thing in every day life. The most immediate, and probably likely example that I can think of is driving. Car accidents are perhaps the most likely danger that all of us are to face every day, and most of them are caused by simple carelessness, and failure to observe others, or to keep one's self in a safe position where there are options (give yourself options: enough distance ahead of you to stop; an empty space in the lane beside of you, if there are multiple lanes, etc.). I've only been driving for about five years, and these things have saved me on many occasions already.
