Trained for 7 years, out for about 12. When I went back the basic technique was there but I could not remember a single kata. Still have a hard time when shown a piece of a kata, do it a few times with my Sensei and as soon as he says to do it on my own I'm lost, I draw a complete blank. Seems at times it will take me 8 years to get to where I was before after 7 years.

Hello, Off course if you don't practice you will lose some edge/speed/timing...and reflexes.

For some it becomes easy to go back...others it is like starting over.

Building muscles is the same thing...don't use it, you will lose it.

Start where you are...it will be back for you in a short while/or years..depends on how hard you want to train?

There will be some things that will always stay in your mind....new things or ways will be presented...things change expect this.......Aloha

I think you use it or lose it. I frequently meet people who, when they find out I'm a MA, say, "Yeah, I'm a millionth degree BB in [name your art]."

I'll say, "Really? Where do you train?"

"Oh, I haven't trained in 20 years."

Sheesh! I'll take a green belt who trains over the BB who doesn't.
