Kukkiwon (Head Chairman Seung Wan Lee) hosted 'Kukkiwon Overseas
Branch Program' meeting on the 9th at Samsung Hotel, Korea. There were
17 nations and 37 associations in attendance for this meeting.
"This meeting's purpose is to unify Taekwondo practitioners from
different nations and to improve martial arts side of Taekwondo"
Chairman Lee said. He added "goals in developing overseas branch are
to create a network in order for us to offer martial arts educational
programs, seminars, and Hanmadang sanctions to other nations."
During the meeting, there were many interesting opinions from
different attendees. Sang Chul Lee (President USTC) who proposed to
have a branch in the United States to Kukkiwon said, "World Taekwondo
Federation (WTF) is an organization that is concentrated in sparring
aspect of Taekwondo. Cuba for example, they learn how to kick before
they learn Poomsae. These athletes do not even know what Kukkiwon is
most of the time. That is why developing Kukkiwon overseas branch is
necessary." Representative from India said "India takes great pride in
Taekwondo. There are many masters in India as well. However, only 3%
of those masters are Kukkiwon certified. This is a big problem. To
certify these masters under Kukkiwon Dan system, overseas branch is a
must." Morocco's Chang Young Yoon master also said "I started the
Taekwondo education program in Morocco for the first time. Because we
lack the numbers of masters in Morocco, I had to do the programs by
myself. There are approximately 20,000 Taekwondo practitioners now in
Morocco. Kukkiwon cannot deny them the education they need. And for
that, overseas branch is very important."
Overall, everybody favored the idea of developing Kukkiwon overseas
branch. Some feel this is crucial for the martial arts aspect of
Taekwondo to once again be embedded into our Taekwondo athletes rather
than be dominated by sparring aspect of Taekwondo.
