*Disclaimer : I suck at intros, they tend to be too long. So I tried to break it up into small parts*
Who am I?
My name is Jerome, age 21, born and raised in Maryland. I'm 5'10 , 200 pounds and I practice body weight strength training.
If I could describe my personality, I could say I'm alot like the "head geek" minus the martial arts experience. I'am a techie, specifically an Information Security Consultant / Web App Security Specialist by trade, so in general I may be in the "Computer Room" part of the forum the most until I can target a style that suits me. Oh and I'm moving to become self employed as I have built AND made money from owning a small scale real estate business that buys single family homes on lease purchases.
I'am a strong anime enthusiast and gamer as well, I'am staff at a local anime convention (Otakon!), however I'm no longer illusion-ed by what I watch. I also play Chess well, Familiar with Shogi, and a newbie at Go. I think that's it apart from me being easy to get along with.
Why am I interested in martial arts?
I took a small karate class under Master R. Flemming when I was 10, yellow belt by age 11, broke my first board and got 3rd place in a small junior tournament. After that, I had to stop due to lack of parents funds, and I never saw that dojo or any dojo for that matter again.
However, my love for the martial art world and their physical and mental disciplines inspired me. So since I couldn't train, I watched anime and movies of martial arts.
Now that I'm older and will be having funds, I'm wanting to get back into that world of discipline. Now with age comes knowledge, I've learned the difference between survival martial arts and sport. What I had taken when I was younger was for sport, I'm now looking to learn and train in survival martial arts.
What are you looking to get out of learning martial arts?
I have three goals that I will achieve in learning:
1. To be able to protect myself at a moments notice.
2. To be able to protect my little brothers the same.
3. To be able to teach what I learn on a small personal scale.
I'm the oldest of 3 and taking care of family is important to me. The thought of not being able to defend my little brothers enrages and scares me.
However, My problem is that I'm Soft styled, I don't like to fight and I don't like hurting other people, I'm more inclined to retreat, but I'm not naive to think that I can get through life without fighting or without hurting anyone. I don't have the skill of intimidation neither am I aggressive. I don't want those skills with ill-intent, but more as like a preventive measure to stop attacks and make people think twice.
I'm like a sheathe with no sword, I'm hard bodied but have no edge. I feel I need to learn martial arts to make up for my lack of aggression and lack of skill in intimidation. Most practical survival based martial arts require that you be hard styled and explosive, something I'm not but I guess I need to be in order to be effective.
I have done competitive sports like lacrosse(2 years), wrestling (3 months), and Crew (2years Boat racing with oars). My body is strong and endurant in my opinion, but that's about it, I haven't changed towards being more aggressive or intimidating at all.
What martial arts have you considered?
I'm looking to specialize in Krav Maga or Systema as my core training, but have Silat as my secondary style to primarily handle weapon defense/offense/disarm training, and finally Brazilian Jujitsu to cover my ground game. This is all theory, but it's the best plan I got.
To my limited knowledge, there aren't any effective soft style martial arts that handle street fights or sudden ambush like fights well. So, my search was primarily hard styled.
Any Input on this would be greatly appreciated. If you need me to answer anything to better help my style hunt, please ask away!
I hope this was a good intro! Happy to be apart & I hope all goes well.
Anything else you want to know? Please ask.
Need me to know anything? Do tell!
