Hmmm, chinese, mandarin, ninja, 7th dan karate; the story is a bit confused. Nevertheless, the results speak for themselves.

'Ninja', 58, beats up 3 muggers

Nelspruit - Three muggers were "taught a lesson" when they tried to rob a 58-year-old man in Nelspruit on Tuesday.

Willie Botha fought back so ferociously that his attackers ended up in hospital.
...
"Back then I was trained by a Chinese instructor in Benoni and I obtained a seventh dan in karate. I also speak fluent Mandarin."

During the "flash fight", as he describes it, he punched one of the attackers so hard that his jaw was dislocated. Botha then kicked him between the legs for good measure.

Botha was able to get his hands on a piece of wood, which he used to teach the second would-be robber a lesson.

"The third guy started running when he saw his buddies getting a hiding, but a passerby caught him and gave him a proper hiding as well!"

I wondered also about the mix... I'd contribute it to faulty and mis-informed reporting more than anything else, one of those who can't tell his **** from a hole in the ground types.

The article states that a passerby caught him and gave him a hiding (interesting word choice btw)... so if someone else beat up the third guy then the article is incorrect (nit-picking I'm sure) and the passerby should get credit for one of the hospitalizations. Unless it means that the passerby caught and HELD the third guy for the 58 yr. old to come running up and take his mad out on 'im... well then it moves OUT of the realm of self-defense and into plain basic assault-n-battery. But since it didn't happen here in the U.S..... I guess it's okay to run down your attackers and give them a what-for. Stupid but legal. Also if I'm not mistaken the passerby would also be charged with assault or at least aiding and abetting an assault by catching the guy in the first place. ... that is if it happened here in the states. Or am I talking out of my hat again?

Remember South Africa is the country where it was legal to fit flame throwers to your car to deal with would-be thieves. A bit of a beating (aka a "good-hiding") means those miscreants got off lightly.
