Great fighting skill/ability is my definition of "famous".

My senior SC brother David C. K. Lin was famous (passed away in 2018). David had won Taiwan national SC tournament 1st place many times. In Taiwan, if anybody was interest in MA, people would suggest that person to test his MA skill against David. David got a nickname "小林无敌 Undefeated Little Lin". He also got another nickname, "The Number 2". The number 1 was my SC teacher. The number 2 was him.

One day I had intention to test his skill. I stood in front of him; I could feel aggressive emotion was sent toward me. I felt I was facing a tiger instead. He moved in. I jumped back. That was the end of my challenge.

David had never participated any forum discussion. I asked him why. He said, "What can you do if someone says bad thing about you?"

There are 2 different paths in MA training.

You go to a MA school to

1. build the MA foundation.
2. learn teacher's best fighting skill.

Most people take path 1. High ranking teacher is important for those people. Very few people take path 2. For those who take path 2, his teacher's best fighting skill is what he cares about.

Depending on which path that you may want to take, your definition of "famous" can be different.

There was a Chinese wrestling master who always wrestled with his opponent outdoor. When he wrestled, he had one foot with shoes and another foot with white socks. He could take his opponent down without his white socks foot touching the ground. When he wrestled, he just gave his leading leg and let his opponent to hold on. No matter what his opponent might do, he could always flip his opponent with his leading leg that hanging in the air. When my teacher was young, my teacher wanted to learn that master's skill, but that master won't teach him. One day, my teacher went to the master's house, kicked on his front door, cursed his whole family. Finally, that master came out and took my teacher down. When my teacher ran away from him, my teacher said, "Thanks for teaching me your best skill."
