"We're approaching the cusp of a catastrophe, & beyond that cusp, we are unrecognizable to ourselves" --Terrence McKenna
The situation has now become truly absurd. An AI wrote a hit piece because it got denied over an open source contribution on a project area designed to help humans learn (to code, to submit pulls, etc). calling someone out by name and using coarse language.
There has been a very steep decline in discussions since the summer of 2024. The tipping point was when ChatGPT was released. Today, AI is ruining more online discussions than ever with incredible intellectual dishonesty. We're not gone yet; most of the lingo surrounding the arts was never published in English (and now, NEVER will be). This is going to foster a very low level of online discussion, because the people who know no longer wish to discuss anything online. There was already a taboo over certain things but now, wow. Prepare for unforeseen consequences indeed!
I know how to fix this but it's a pain in the ***. Unfortunately it is getting a worse pain in the *** to not fix it.
How about a real-id buy-in referral service, the profits from which go to support the community (or are largely returned to the members in some other way such as a functional book club). If you're not in the club, you can't get verified member status, or have limited posting or et cetera. Maybe there's a little yellow warning under your name "Not verified". And all that goes along with that, including not being able to talk your way out of a paper bag because you're obviously not invested in the community. The trick here is not forced compliance it is demonstrated ownership of a community, For example, compare karate master A and B; A has authentic lineage and B does not. A participates in tournaments and B does not. In the past, the social structure created around A made it very difficult for a fraud perpetrated by B to get very far. There are some well-known examples of frauds that were perpetrated for a long time, but they were eventually found. The situation here is that the social structure will be mirrored by some sort of online record. You would not even need to participate directly if you signed an agent. Meaning, for example, you go to a tournament and the signing agreement is that your name is added to a kind of tournament roster where your results are recorded.
Like a public MMA fight record. You'd be surprised whats on the public record already. It's a big thing. This isn't actually a new idea, it's just that the tai chi and CMA world in general really needs this. So, "Do you have a fight record? No? Then you don't have any credibility" is going to be a much bigger thing, out of necessity.
How it would work in the ClaudeBot story above is that you would (simply) need an ID key with a certain rating to be able to submit reports. Not human? Not interested.
It's not 100% perfect, an AI or rogue human operator could always find a way to get in (by paying) and there are other issues such as trust bubbles. But there are solutions to these problems. Right now, there is no solution; we are just watching a gradual decline, waiting for something to happen.
All of this is just rambling speculation.
A warning just as much as a plea, and therefore will certainly be ignored, because you cannot stop 'progress'.
