What martial arts book are you currently reading?

If the samurai actually lived by these ideals, then they were unbelievably stoic.

…having read these, I suspect very few lived by the ideals in the previous post. They were as duplicitous and self-serving as anyone, ambitious for wealth and power.

That’s Terry Holt on the cover! He was one of our senior Kendo teachers.

The TV series opening titles presented my Karate teacher, Suzuki Tatsuo Sensei, Sakagami and Sugasawa sensei

The episode about Katori Shintō Ryu is still one of the best accounts of the oldest extant school of martial arts.

The book makes me feel very nostalgic too…🥲

We had some brilliant generals, both on and off the battlefield, that were instrumental in the US becoming a superpower. Kind of a shame that Kim Kardashian and Bad Bunny enjoy fame that these men, unknown to the public, richly deserve.

I 100% agree with this statement, this why I don't pay much attention to the celebrity's. They have no business making so much money or being so famous. Our real heroes are the men who fought and died for our country. Our veterans should be the ones given voices, not these pampered Hollywood clowns.

The clamour for their output, interviews, fragrances boggles my mind.

Mind you, General Patton’s, ‘Napalm in the Morning’ fragrance was a bit of an ‘acquired taste’ 🤢

have you read Joko Ninomiya’s books? His Sabaki Method: Karate in the Inner Circle is great from a karate strategy standpoint. He’s got an autobiography which I’ve heard is great, but I don’t know anything about it. Been meaning to pick it up, but you know how that goes.

Late to the party but can chime in. His Bio is fun and entertaining, especially when discussing his visit to the US to help train Kyokushin students at the time, many who were featured in early 70's karate documentaries. Sabaki method book covers the basics of Enshin Karate and has great photo sequences.

There are exceptions to this. One of my closest friends is a Hollywood actor. She has put in longer hours, done more, and donated more to charitable causes for the last thirty years than anyone I’ve ever known.

She is not pampered and she is no clown.

As with everything, it depends. These issues are rarely all one-or-the-other.

She doesn’t have a martial arts belt. If she did she would ask me if she should wash it.

I would tell her no.

There are exceptions yes, and I'm sure she is a hardworking actor and a good person. The problem I have is when these rich celebrities think that because they are rich, they somehow know better than everyone else and think they can dictate how people live.

Stick to acting. Their job is to act not tell me how I'm supposed to live my life. They are not experts on everything because they are famous. I have never worshipped celebrities, and I never will. I would rather get an autograph from Dakota Meyer, Kyle Carpenter, or any WWII vet than one from Bruce Willis (who I like as an actor) or any other ones who I enjoy watching. They are entertainers, and many live the good life. Sure, there are others who are not so famous who work hard and are genuinely good people.

Well, they (and musicians and sports people, the latter being amongst the most poorly educated people in the universe) ) are often asked their opinions on political/social/moral issues during interviews so they give them. It’s not their fault and anyone who tempers their moral standpoint based upon what The Rock/Kevin Heart or Kid Rock say should be seriously questioning themselves.

Are there any entertainers who are particularly bad at proselytising their views? I can’t really think of any.

I just read the History of Karate and the Masters who made it and now I'm reading Taekwondo: From a Martial Art to a Martial Sport. Both are great books. I have a nice backlog too. Looking forward to reading the Bubishi and the Book of Five Rings.
