Then add into each art was trying to find its own niche in things, they each removed things that made them like other arts to be unique. For example, karate removed the grappling portion and focused on striking only. Judo removed most of the striking of Jujutsu and focused on the grappling
Good post, just one little clarification: The quote is essentially true, but I think it was not just each individual art deciding to narrow their focus to have their own niche, but rather the MA community (with government guidance). This reduced any political friction and kept one art from "stepping on the other's toes." All in the spirit of harmony. It also simplified teaching the arts in the public schools.

Not sure about the other arts, but in Okinawan karate dojos, outside the public school realm, grappling was still taught to the chosen private students as an integral part of the art. So there was a two tier structure in the teaching. Pre- WWll karate was taught at the master's house to the "hard core" students, so there was both school karate and home karate, as it was referred to.
