Tell me something good...

Got a flu (or a real bastard of a cold) over Easter, so today was my first day back at BJJ since Good Thursday. It was good to get a workout in and I had a blast, but GOD, my cardio was in the toilet. And my partner was:

1. 18; and
2. An actual honest-to-god elite hockey player.

I, in contrast, am 46 (with 28 years of training mileage), overweight (though there's been some significant progress on that front) and coming back from illness.

The difference in athleticism and cardio was QUITE apparent.

But I'm back again! That's the something good!

Patience and dirty tricks…

He's a brand new white belt, so while he had the edge in athleticism, his technique was, of course, lacking. While he had an incredible base, I was able to take advantage of one of his explosions to take his back from my closed guard and keep for most of the round.

He's very talented and eager to learn. He's gonna be a monster once he actually knows what he's doing.

Good on ya!
Far and away, one of the biggest challenges we see as we get older is recovery time. If just takes longer. Period. Keep at it and you will acclimate in short order.

Pavel's quick and the dead has made training fun again for me. No tiresome preparation, elaborate stretching routines, constantly changing WODs or difficult substitutions to work out, just swings pushups and kicking it.

My wife just told me that yesterday, her physical therapist (same one I go to and same one who sent her to the hospital that ONE time, saving her life most likely) told her, unprompted, that if she wanted to run a marathon, she'd build her a five-year training plan.

On the face of it, not such good news, but think about it: There's a path towards a marathon. For someone who had a vertebra basically disintegrated around 4 years ago. There's a path. Towards. A. Marathon.

Holy crap. How far she's come. I'm legit choked up.

In your stupid face, cancer.

And by 'get knotted' I mean *expletives removed for reasons of taste, decency, zoological plausibility and the future of the human race*

I'm having a staycation. Fortunately, I already live in rural Wales so I don't need to go anywhere. I deserve a few days off. Gonna read, water plants and alligate.

Wide open King Salmon bite yesterday. Caught nearly 30 in under 3 hours, kept 12. I will be targeting Pacific Halibut next weekend. Time to stock my freezer while this ocean is napping… yesterday was gorgeous and gentle. Nothing warms the cockles of my heart like reeling fish after fish to the sound of other would anglers hurling their breakfast into the open arms of Poseidon…
