Hello all my tough but squeezy Martial Talk friends :)

I hated Amsterdam yesterday so it’s Rotterdam today and it’s nice here and so many different voices and colours and faces in the one small place, and that gives a great perspective. Only problem is my dutch is VERY poor and I can't speak it without sounding like I got cake stuck in my throat, ha! Well, I was sitting earlier with the window open listening to all the tunes coming out of some apartment and some other open window across the block - I tell ya they had taste whoever they were and I was quite liking what I heard - the sort of music you would only listen to on your own even though they were blastin' it right loud! And I got thinking how music can sometimes be our friend where there ARE no friends, it can keep us company through our misery, or cheer us and lift us up and out; it can gee us up for fighting or calm our zeal and show us our hearts or remind us of where we are in the world and a million other things...

So.... I'd be appreciative if you can share a lyric or song that you spin up on your machine or in your car or on your pod when you're either feeling a certain way or WANTING to feel a certain way. No matter what your mood, I would love to hear what you’re hearing and how you hear it. A good chance I'll have it here on my little ipod 40gb just shy of full. I promise I will reply to everyone who takes the time to give me a lyric and I will give you one of my own in the same vein if I can, in fact I'll match ya one for one.

Thank you all SO very much :)

OK so I guess down and underneath, I’m feeling a bit annoyed and maybe as if I don't really care so much about things at the minute and not in a Limp Bizkit "Break Stuff" way but more in a Trent Reznor "Sin" sort of way. If I wasn't angry at people before I listened to this well I am now, ha! So....
You give me the reason, you give me control.
I gave you my purity and my purity you stole.
Did you think I wouldn't recognise this compromise. Am I just too stupid to realise.
Stale incense, old sweat and lies! Lies! Lies!

It comes down to this: your kiss; your fist; and your straining gets under my skin, within.
Take in, the extent of my sin.

If I'd have answered earlier today I was a little more melancholy and wistful and well, "Parisienne Walkways" is such a beautifully haunting and sorrowful song and....
Looking back at the photographs.
Those summer days spent outside corner cafes.
Oh, I could write you paragraphs, about my old Parisienne days.

If anyone's got either, I'd love you to spin 'em up for me!!
But more than that, I'd love to hear one from you :)

I've always loved music, whether playing it on the piano (don't ask me to play anything now; I'm out of practice - lol) or listening to it in my car or at home. The kind of music I listen to depends on my mood. I listen to popular (primarily 80's) music while I'm driving or relaxing at home, New Age when I really want to relax or fall asleep, and classical when I'm in a REALLY bad mood (classical music has a way of calming my frayed nerves).

I find the song "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan comforting whenever I'm feeling down in the dumps - especially if those feelings were caused by relationship drama.

Angel
by Sarah McLachlan

Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There’s always one reason
To feel not good enough
And it’s hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memory seeps from my veins
Let me be empty
And weightless and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there

So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There’s vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lie
That you make up for all that you lack
It don’t make no difference
Escaping one last time
It’s easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
This glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

I have always found Meatloaf's Bat of of Hell Album fantastic.

For crying out loud is probably my favorite. Reminds me of my younger days when love was tough and heart breaking when your six month relationship with the guy of your dreams  ended. ;)

I was lost till you were found
But I never know how far down
I was falling
Before I reached the bottom
I was cold and you were fire
And I never knew how the pyre
Could be burning
On the edge of the ice field
And now the chilly California wind
Is blowing down our bodies again
And we're sinking deeper and deeper in the chilly California sand
Oh I know you belong inside my aching heart
And can't you see my faded Levis bursting apart
And don't you hear me crying:
"Oh Babe, don't go"
And don't you hear me screaming
"How was I to know?"
I'm in the middle of nowhere
Near the end of the line
But there's a border to somewhere waiting
And there's a tankful of time
Oh give me just another moment to see the light of the day
And take me to another land where I don't have to stay
And I'm gonna need somebody to make me feel like you do
And I will receive somebody with open arms, open eyes
Open up the sky and let the planet that I love shine through
For crying out loud
You know I love you
For crying out loud
You know I love you
For crying out loud
You know I love you
I was damned and you were saved
And I never knew how enslaved
I was kneeling
In the chains of my master
I could laugh but you could cry
And I never knew just how high
I was flying
Ah, with you right above me
And now the chilly California wind
Is blowing down our bodies again
And we're sinking deeper and deeper in the chilly California sand
Oh I know you belong inside my aching heart
And can't you see my faded Levis bursting apart
And don't you hear me crying:
"Oh Babe, don't go"
And don't you hear me screaming
"How was I to know?"
I'm in the middle of nowhere
Near the end of the line

And take me to another land where I don't have to stay
And I'm gonna need somebody to make me feel like you do
And I will receive somebody with open arms, open eyes
Open up the sky and let eh planet that I love shine through
For crying out loud
You know I love you
For crying out loud
You know I love you
For crying out loud
You know I love you
For taking in the rain when I'm feeling so dry
For giving me the answers when I'm asking you why
My oh my
For that I thank you
For taking in the sun when I feel so cold
For giving me a child when my body is old
And don't you know
That I need you
For coming to my room when you know I'm alone
For finding me a freeway and for driving me home
And you got to know
For that I serve you
For pulling me away when I'm starting to fall
For revving me up when I'm starting to stall
And you got to know
For that I want you
For taking and for giving and for playing the game
For praying for my future in the days that remain
Oh Lord
For that I hold you
Ah, but most of all
For crying out loud
For that I love you
Ah, but most of all
For crying out loud
For that I love you
Ah, but most of all
For crying out loud
For that I love you
When you're crying out loud
You know I love you

Hey Lisa :)

Wow, that's amazing and you got it all in there too. Thanks for this. It's amazing how we forget stuff so the reminder of BooH is well overdue for me! Yep, that there's the sort of song to listen to reflectively. Quite a mournful lyric dontcha think? Best line there for me was always "Open up the sky and let the planet that I love shine through" I think that's beautiful. A classic from the big man! :) But ya know when it comes to tough love and splitting up I always took the hard line, you know - stuff ya, we'll see. And I got one for ya from a little band we got over in the UK. The song's about the singer's two-timing g/f but I love the "who do you think you are? Go on, get lost now," sentiment:

I could not eat for days,
I cried so much my face has never been the same...
And now you're back here with your lies.
I hope you realise...

You think I'm gonna take you back? You'd better do better than that.
I'll tell ya how its gonna be, don't you never ever come near me.
Let me tell you how I've been: I've been hiding from my friends, hiding from the world, hiding from myself.
You think you'll come round here, start singing in my ear, girl you damaged me, I don't forgive so easily.
You better do better than that!

I love it. Thanks Lisa for giving me a little thought :) :)

when I'm working out I listen to a lot of rock: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns 'n' Roses, Drowning Pool, etc.

One song that I totally love I just heard for the first time a couple of months ago, it's called March of Cambreadth by Heather Alexander. It sounds like it belongs on the Braveheart soundtrack...makes me want to go swing a battle-axe. :D

March of Cambreadth (go to the link and scroll down to hear the song)

Axes flash, broadsword swing,
Shining armour's piercing ring
Horses run with polished shield,
Fight Those Bastards till They Yield
Midnight mare and blood red roan,
Fight to Keep this Land Your Own
Sound the horn and call the cry,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Follow orders as you're told,
Make Their Yellow Blood Run Cold
Fight until you die or drop,
A Force Like Ours is Hard to Stop
Close your mind to stress and pain,
Fight till You're No Longer Sane
Let not one damn cur pass by,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Guard your women and children well,
Send These Bastards Back to Hell
We'll teach them the ways of war,
They Won't Come Here Any More
Use your shield and use your head,
Fight till Every One is Dead
Raise the flag up to the sky,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Dawn has broke, the time has come,
Move Your Feet to a Marching Drum
We'll win the war and pay the toll,
We'll Fight as One in Heart and Soul
Midnight mare and blood red roan,
Fight to Keep this Land Your Own
Sound the horn and call the cry,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Hey my good friend SL! :)

Wow, you must have got it bad to be listening to this track. I know totally what you mean, this is so poignant and profound. And SAD too - and what would Miles and Sarah think of you getting all ruminative!! So I'm gonna give you something from the lovely KT Tunstall. Called "Under the Weather" I just love this it's a little sad but there's just the merest hint of sad-but-yet-NOT :)

Under this national rain cloud
I'm getting soaked to the skin
Trying to find my umbrella
But I don't know where to begin

And it's simply irrational weather
Can't even hear myself think
Constantly bailing out water
But still feel like I'm gonna sink

Coz I'm under the weather
Just like the world
So sorry for being so bold
When I turn out the light
You're out of sight
Although I know that I'm not alone
Feels like home
Feels like home

I can see his face. I can hear his voice.

I can feel his touch. I remember his walk.

I lied down next to him so many times.

Adieu, et Bon Débarras!!! :uhyeah:

High Road Easy (Sass Jordan)

Got a pocket full of power
Got a handle on control
Take a better man than you babe
To rectify the damage to my soul

Cos you took me down so easy
Got the devil in your veins
I may remember what was good
But I won't forget the pain
No I won't forget the pain

Take the High Road Easy
When your steel begins to rust
Take the High Road Easy
And your bones will turn to dust

Well this morning it was sunshine
But my head was in the clouds
Cause the minute that I hit the streets
Saw your face in every crowd
With the humble scraps you feed me

Got addicted to the game
And even though the face will fade
I won't forget the name
No I won't forget the name

Take the High Road Easy
When your face begins to crack
Take the High Road Easy
Cause you won't be comin' back

Time will tell if your destined to fall
Gotta throw that **** away
You don't want more, no you just want it all
Well it might be better baby
You know the devil's got to get paid

Hey KT :)

Wow, thanks for that. This stuff really kicks a$$ but be careful now with that axe, you'll have somebody's eye out! :D Seriously, yeah I know what you mean and thanks for the link - I'm a collector see? Training needs something to get the blood coursing you're absolutely right. Well, an oldie (sort of) but goodie, I pop on a sprinkle of the sweeties who call themselves Rammstein. Nothing like that thumpin Du Hast to get the fight mentality - of course I'm a lover not a fighter don'tcha know, ha! :D But just for you badboys....

Du
Du hast
Du hast mich
Du hast mich gefragt
Du hast mich gefragt und ich habe nichts gesagt

Arguments over the translation I know but the band's own non literal version on the sleeve I have is

You
You hate
You hate me
You hate me to say
You hate me to say and I did not obey

I dunno what the h3ll that means but hey, it's damned hard when ya spit it venomously in german, LOL. Rock on!

Hey my lovely Carol :)

Man that is one mean and DIRTY song! Woohoo, I love it and I've never heard that before so thank you and for the link too. This is so great to hear these songs and get the FEEL them and that's what it is all about. That's fantastic! Ok, ok, well you'll prolly not know this but it's a stonking track by two lovely boys David McAlmont and Bernard Butler from a few years back. If you can dig it out on Torrentspy or wherever you go (or a shop ha!), make a point for me, yeah?? Quite simply, it's called "Yes" and I love it SO much....

So you wanna know me now, how I've been?
You can't help someone recover after what you did.
So tell me am I looking better?
Have you forgot, whatever it was that you couldn't stand, about me about me about me?

Because...
Yes I do feel better! Yes I do, I feel alright!
I feel well enough to tell you what you can do with what you got,
To offer

So there now, that'll learn him. Tell him to get lost anyway Carol - best way! :D

A Man I'll Never Be

If I said what's on my mind
You'd turn and walk away
Disappearing way back in your dreams
It's so hard to be unkind
So easy just to say
That everything is just the way it seems
You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind you see
A man I'll never be
If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
And it gets harder every day for me
To hide behind this dream you see
A man I'll never be
I can't get any stronger
I can't climb any higher
You'll never know just how hard I've tried
Cry a little longer
And hold a little tighter
Emotions can't be satisfied
You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind you see
A man I'll never be If only I could find a way
I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am
And it gets harder every day for me
To hide behind this dream you see
A man I'll never be

I'm one of those who like Art Rock, bands like Supertramp, Yes, Rush, Genesis and so forth.
Supertramp is one of my absolute favorites. To me there's an intelligence and insight to many of their lyrics; like from these songs from Breakfast in America

Goodbye Stranger
Now I believe in what you say
Is the undisputed truth
But I have to have things my own way
To keep me in my youth...

...And I will go on shining
Shining like brand new
If I never look behind me
My troubles will be few...

You can laugh at my behavior
That'll never bother me
Say the devil is my savior
But I don't pay no heed...

Take The Long Way Home

Does it feel that your life's become a catastophe
Oh, it has to be, for you to grow boy
And when you look through the years and see what you could've been
Oh what you might've been
If you had more time....

Lord Is It Mine

I know that there's a reason why I need to be alone
To show me there's a silent place that I can call my own
Is it mine?
Oh Lord, is it mine?
You know I get so weary from the battles in this life
And there's many times it seems that you're the only hope in sight
Is it mine?
Oh Lord, is it mine?
When everything's dark, and nothing seems right
There's nothing to win, and there's no need to fight
I never cease to wonder at the cruelty of this land
But it seems that a time of sadness is the time to understand
Is it mine?
Oh Lord, is it mine?
When everything's dark, and nothing seems right
You don't have to win it, and there's no need to fight
(instrumental)
If only I could find a way
To feel your sweetness through the day
The love that shines around me could be mine
So give us an answer won't you?
We know what we have to do
There must be a thousand voices trying, to get through

Hey Michael my man :)

This is just superb. Another one I don't know but the lyric is strong for sure! Though I wonder does that go out the window when you're driving your fast car oh btw, what sorta car you driving there anyway?? I'm interested, I am. How fast we talking? TVR fast or one of those damn old-school Corvette Stingrays!! And you're from New Hampshire too which I am very reliably informed is THE most beautiful place to be driving that fast car. But ya know, when I read that and thought about the sentiment rather than the fast car, the first thing that came to mind for me was ....

It's not like you didn't know that
I said I love you and I swear I still do
It must have been so bad
Cause living with me must have damn near killed you
And this is how you remind me
Of what i really am

I think Nickelback do this sort of powerful self-effacing melancholy thing so well. Thanks for this - oh and please let me know what motor you're listening to it in!!

There must be a thousand voices trying, to get through
Hey Ralph :)

Excellent, I'm feelin ya here, I really am. Yeah and whatever happened to lyrics with a bit of esoterica and mysticism in them? These great art-rock prog-rock men are great for lifting the spirit out of the mundane I think and thank you for them!

When it comes to this era, I'm thinking Rick Wakeman and twenty five minute kbd solos, ha! And I'm thinking Asia too but I'll have to leave you forgetting clever lyrics and just get yer foot tapping to a venerable good honest rock classic of that era. I'm not sure the connection but hey, I just love this and maybe you'll go spin it up for me wherever you are....

And now I'm feelin' better
Cause I found out for sure
She took me to her doctor
And he told me of a cure
He said that any love is good love
So I took what I could get
Yes I took what I could get
And then she looked at me with them big brown eyes

And said, You ain't seen nuthin' yet
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nuthin' yet
Here's something, here's something that you're never gonna forget, baby
B-B-B-Baby, you know, you know, you know, you just ain't seen nuthin' yet
You need an education, got to go to school

Oh yeah, can't get enough of that good stuff.

In the old days, it was a Monza Red Mitsubishi 3000 GT. A CD player in a car in 1992 was not totally exclusive, but pretty rare. Of course, by that time, the song was already 14 years old...

P.S. The artist states, and I agree, that the way to listen to this music is not on an MP3 player. It really does affect the music (even if you use some of those fancy Bose headphones).

Alan Parsons...actually a lot will do ("Silence and I", "Old And Wise", "Limelight"", "Ammonia Avenue") but the one that hits me the most is "Oh Life (There Must Be More)"
--------------------
Waves roll out
Out to sea
Tasting the salt-water
Tears upon her cheek
Morning breaks
She's not there
Who could ever find her?
Who would even care?

No one heard
No one came
No angel of mercy
Appears to know her name
Where is hope
When words fail
All the colours running
Inside when life turns pale

In the dock the boats are harboured
Where the water's cold and still
Oh life, she cries, I've lost the will
From the bridge she sees a lifetime
Being washed upon the shore
Oh life, she cries
There must be more..
.
Tides roll in
Waters rise
Any chance of reason
Only clouds her eyes
Arms of grace
She won't feel
All the wounds inside her
That time can never heal

The city lights shine seaward
Swirling in a trance
Her eyes upon the water
Alone in her last dance

From the docks the boats are leaving
As she cries into the dawn
"Oh life, I'm barely holding on"

And she sees her future falling
Til it finds the ocean floor
Oh life, she cries
There must be more
There must be more

And with the early light
She'll sail into the clear
The winds are all behind her
The hour's almost here

From the bridge she hears the voices
Turn into a roar
Oh life she cries
There must be more

On the dock her soul is sinking
But her spirit longs to soar
Oh life, she cries
There must be more
There must be more
There must be more
Oh life I'm barely holding on
There must be more
There must be more
Oh life there must be something more

Jenna, I hope you don’t mind me saying but you seem such a completely endearing person [sincerely]. Your verve has on more than one occasion made me smile and I get the impression of you as a very genuine person. Well just for you, here's a ditty from the Pistols that says hey people drop all the nonsense and pretense, I don't care for it, I'm me and I'm the genuine article, no BS and no padding - a top track Pretty Vacant. I'd put it on when I think people are getting up themselves.

Don't ask us to attend 'cos we're not all there
I don't pretend 'cos I don't care
I don't belive illusions 'cos too much is for real
So stop your cheap comment 'cos we know what we feel
Oh we're so pretty, oh so pretty... We're vacant
Oh we're so pretty, oh so pretty... We're vacant
Ah but now... And we don't care!

Respects!

In the Void (Where still, this merciless GOD torme
Due to All the crap that goes on at work, and life for me, repetitively, I guess I would go with:

The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round. The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round, all the live long day!

I find a couple of Staind songs coming to mind. I'll skip to my favorite parts:

It's Been Awhile
And it's been awhile
Since I can say that I wasn't addicted
And it's been awhile
Since I can say I love myself as well
And it's been awhile
Since I've gone and f----d things up just like I always do
And it's been awhile
But all that s--t seems to disappear when I'm with you

And everything I can't remember
As f----d up as it all may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
I've gone and f----d things up again

Why must I feel this way?
Just make this go away
Just one more peaceful day!

And it's been awhile
Since I could look at myself straight
And it's been awhile
Since I said I'm sorry
And it's been awhile
Since I've seen the way the candles light your face
And it's been awhile
But I can still remember just the way you taste

and...

Outside
All the times
That I felt like this won't end
It's for you
And I taste
What I could never have
It was from you
All the times
That I've cried
My intentions
Full of pride
But I waste
More time than anyone

But I'm on the outside
And I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you

All the times
That I've cried
All this wasted
It's all inside
And I feel
All this pain
Stuffed it down
It's back again
And I lie
Here in bed
All alone
I can't mend
But I feel
Tomorrow will be OK

Anyone remember this guy? Ohhhh yeah, bet a number of you do... heh
------------------------

Like A Rolling Stone ~ Bob Dylan

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime, in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to, laugh about
Everybody that was, hanging out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging, for your next meal.

(Chorus)
How does it feel?
How does it feel?
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get, juiced in it
Nobody has ever taught you how to live out on the street
And now you're gonna have to get, used to it
You said you'd never, compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any, alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And say, do you want to, make a deal?

(repeat chorus)

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all did, tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your, kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder, a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you, everything, he could steal

(repeat chorus)

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're all drinking, thinking, that they, got it made
Exchanging all precious gifts
But you'd better take your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal

Awww (repeat chorus)
