so I'm listening to music and there's always a part that kinda strikes a chord in me, and I'm like, hey, yeah! A lot of times its just really obvious stuff, but I like listening to music that does that to me.

So I'm making a random thread where we can share ours, if you guys are anything like me and listen to music while surfing the net.

From the Atari's "boys of summer" (Yes, I know, some other people did it first, but I like this version)

Out on the road today, I saw a black flag sticker on a cadillac
A little voice inside my head said, "don’t look back. you can never look back."
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go
but...

Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin really strikes a chord, a really sad chord. I can't even listen to it anymore, heck, I can't even post about it without feeling a bit sad.

I'm not usually a country music fan - but Tim McGraw's "Live like you were dying" really caught my attention, especially the chorus:

He said I was in my early forties
with a lot of life before me
when a moment came that stopped me on a dime
and I spent most of the next days
looking at the x-rays
Talking bout the options
and talking bout sweet time
I asked him when it sank in
that this might really be the real end
how's it hit you when you get that kinda news
man what'd you do

and he said
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu
and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

He said I was finally the husband
that most the time I wasn't
and I became a friend a friend would like to have
and all the sudden going fishin
wasn't such an imposition
and I went three times that year I lost my dad
well I finally read the good book
and I took a good long hard look
at what I'd do if I could do it all again

and then
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu
and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

Like tomorrow was a gift and you got eternity to think about
what'd you do with it what did you do with it
what did I do with it
what would I do with it?

Sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu
and then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I watched an eagle as it was flying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying

Before I say anything, please hold the jokes, as the lyrics in the song that I will name are much deeper that what you would expect from the song title.

"Stinkfist" by Tool has always struck a cord in me. Actually, most of thier songs strike a cord in me. The lyrics he writes about being abused as a child and all of the fallout that it caused him as an adult is so powerful and moving, it can't really be described in words. If you haven't heard it, listen to it.

This one always picks me up.

Hold your fire,
Keep it burning bright
Hold the flame 'til the dream ignites
A spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission

I hear their passionate music
Read the words that touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart

When I feel the powerful visions
Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct
I wish I had that drive

Spirits fly on dangerous missions
Imaginations on fire
Focused high on soaring ambitions
Consumed in a single desire

In the grip of a nameless possession
A slave to the drive of obsession
A spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission.

I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
But dreams don't need to have motion
To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action
Pride turns on the drive

It's cold comfort
To the ones without it
To know how they struggled
How they suffered about it
If their lives were exotic and strange
They would likely have gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane

We each pay a fabulous price
For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission.

I just can't get the kate Bush lyric, "This Black Box is a Stone Around My Neck" out of my head. The more I listen to the song the more I think I know what she is talking about. I could be way off or right on. What do you think it means?

Now this looks like a job for me
so everybody
just follow me
cuz we need a little
controversy,
cuz it feels so empty without me!

The Wanderer
I went out wandering
through streets paved with gold
lifted some stone saw the skin and bones
of a city without a soul
I went out wandering
under an atomic sky
where the ground won't turn
and the rain it burns
like the tears when I said goodbye

Yeah I left with nothing
nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering

I went drifting
through the capitals of tin
where men can't walk or freely talk
and sons turn their fathers in
Yeah I went out walking
down that old Lake Lane
I passed by a thousand signs
Just a looking for my own name

Yeah I left with nothing
nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering

Yeah I went out there in search of experience
to taste and to touch and to feel as much
as a man can before he repents

I went walking
looking for one good man
a spirit who would not bend or break
who would stand at his father's right hand
I went out walking with a Bible and a gun
the word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one
Now Jesus don't you wait up
Jesus I'll be home soon
Yeah I went out for the paper
Told her I'd be back by noon

Yeah I left with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering

Yeah I left with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
I went wandering

This song hits me every time I hear it. One of my favorites.
Now And Forever ~ Carol King
Now and forever, you are a part of me
And the memory cuts like a knife
Didn't we find the ecstasy, didn't we share the daylight
When you walked into my life

Now and forever, I'll remember
All the promises still unbroken
And think about all the words between us
That never needed to be spoken

We had a moment, just one moment
That will last beyond a dream, beyond a lifetime
We are the lucky ones
Some people never get to do all we got to do
Now and forever, I will always think of you

Didn't we come together, didn't we live together
Didn't we cry together
Didn't we play together, didn't we love together
And together we lit up the world

I miss the tears, I miss the laughter
I miss the day we met and all that followed after
Sometimes I wish I could always be with you
The way we used to do
Now and forever, I will always think of you
Now and forever, I will always be with you

There's a couple sections of some songs that really strike me and get me through some dark days:

GNR--Locomotive

I bought me an illusion
An I put it on the wall
I let it fill my head with dreams
And I had to have them all
But oh the taste is never so sweet
As what you'd believe it is-
Well I guess it never is

QOTSA--Songs for the Deaf

Who are you hiding
Is it safe for the deaf
Beautiful cancer
Infiltrate and forget
And I saw you coming
And I heard not a thing
A mistake not to listen
When I knew where you'd been
