Saw this in the paper the other day.
http://www.courant.com/news/breaking/hc-no-porn-prisons-0712-20110711,0,558688.story

Inmates in the state's prisons and jails have a year to wean themselves off pornography.
The state Department of Correction announced Monday that effective June 30, 2012, sexually explicit material will be banned from all its facilities. Fliers explaining the new rule were posted in correction institutions on Friday.
Prisoners were given nearly a year's notice on the ban so that they could allow current subscriptions to expire and make arrangements to get rid of their stashes of porn, according to correction officials.

And then on the flip side, you have this.

Of course, it'd only be a matter of time before the ACLU got involved.

So, to satisfy the 'needs' of those that're locked up, do you feel they should be allowed to have access to porn?

Great topic. One side of me says they have no rights. They lost all rights when they were convicted and sent to prison. Without any solid data to draw from it is difficult to determine what long term affect it will have on their rehabilitation process. On the other hand I would have to say they can and should do without. I wonder who is paying for the porn magazines??

Hmmm ... I'm not sure. Wouldn't it just make things worse than simple abstinence for all concerned?

Oh, come on! They are in the slammer....it's supposed to be punishment!!
I don't agree with Pepto pink walls, but porn?

Prison ***** Lyrics
Artist(Band):Rodney Carrington

They say our love is taboo
that what were doing is wrong
but I don't care what they say 'cause my love is so strong
they tell us we should be ashamed
were not husband and wife
but I cherish each moment with you
I'm so glad you're in my life

verse:
You're my prison *****
my prison ***** you're not like other men
I'm glad we share a prison cell when lights go out at ten
I can't escape the way I feel now that will be a crime
as long as I am doing you I don't mind doing time
'cause you're my
prison *****
my prison *****
and I have no regrets, I got you for a candy bar and a pack of cigarettes
at first you were resistant but now you are my friend
I knew that I would get you in the end

chorus:
Prison *****
prison *****
I guess that you were sent from up-above
Yeah!
Prison *****
prison *****
and now you are my prisoner of love

(verse 2:prison *****)
I'm your prison *****
your prison *****
and you're a sex machine
I only have but one request
how 'bout some vasaline (Shut up!)
I'm tired of this prison cell
I need to get away, they sentence me to seven years
not seven times a day
I'm your prison *****
your prison *****
you nympho-maniac (Come here!)
I really hate these knockers that you tattoo'd on my back
I thought that I could break away
but now I'm losing hope
and god I'm tired of picking up the soap

Bend over prison *****!!(oo ooh oo)
Prison *****!(doo ooh oo)
Turn out the lights 'cause I can hardly wait
Prison *****!(doo ooh oo)
Prison *****!(doo ooh oo)
(*****:) When I get out I'm ready to go straight!

(verse 3:)
You're my prison *****
my prison *****
I'll never say goodbye
you're not like all the others
too bad they had to die...

prison *****:
on second thought I think I'll stay if you want me to-ooo
your prison ***** is never leaving you!

outro:
At first you were my cell mate but now you're my soul mate
come here come here baby!! Come here!
(*****:)Oh no not again (rrr)
now I know why they call you a "HARDENED" criminal

hang on you're about to find why they call this the pokey!!!

oooooooo

I'm split on this as well. As far as the rehab goes....well, thats always a topic in which 99% of the time, I raise the BS flag on. Reason being from what I've seen, the large majority of inmates have no intent on fixing themselves, so why waste the time on it? But as for the porn....would having access to magazines curb their 'hunger' for lack of better words? Possibly. OTOH, it may lead to people getting so excited and frustrated, that they rape another inmate.

But I agree with your thoughts here....they're in prison so why should they get every single luxury they'd get in the free world? As for who would pay for it....I doubt the prison store would carry it, so they'd have to rely on mail or having family bring it to them.

The answer is probably 'it depends'. Like most real world things, there's a massive pile of grey.

First, we have to remember that the majority of humans in prison are not murderous donkey-raping psychopaths. Less than one quarter of American crime with a personal victim is violent, and a large portion is in for drug related offenses. In large, we are talking about thieves, fraudsters, and drug addicts. Remember too, not every sex offender is in for rape or pedophilia - punishment for a rapist is significantly different from rehabilitation for a habitual john.

For most people, masturbation is soothing. Pr0n can be a part of that. For the non-psychopathic, however, it is also possible, especially one like prison where many basic psychological needs can go unmet, it can be part of the ritual the criminal uses to work himself up to doing whatever it is he does sexually. The average person has to work himself into a sort of trance to do things that he finds disadvantageous or morally reprehensible. He has to get laser focused on the reward of the behaviour, and blind to the consequences. What he does once he's in that state will depend on personality and opportunity; he's as likely to 'drop the soap' as he is to rape some one. It is impossible to say what portion of prisoners will end up in that state, but our habit of imprisoning drug addicts instead of treating them won't help, as once you have one addiction, it's easier, afaik, to add more of them.

It does sound like they have a legitimate problem, especially with inmates fighting over it, though I would also share the ACLU's enforcement concerns. Is the Sistine Chapel porn? Is Nabokov's Lolita porn? Is a Sears lingerie ad porn? Does it justify taking the whole newspaper? The prisons should be prepared to adjust the policy as necessary.

I’d like to see a study on the incidence of violence in a prison with porn vs. one without. To me whatever helps keep them calm and following the rules inside is a good thing.

BTW what is classified as porn? Hardcore? Softcore? Pin-ups? Lingerie ads? The Sears catalogue? A stick figure drawing with boobs?

This sounds like more a political decision then one based on any real evidence.

I'd imagine SI, Maxim, are fine. Penthouse, Hustler, Playboy are not. As for the study....yeah, I'd be interested in seeing something like that as well.
